How to remove paint/what to put on for new paint

Hi I have a older McCulloch boat and before I purchased it was painted many times with many different types of paint. What would be the best way to remove the old paint and what would be recomended for new paint<br /><br />Thanks <br />Jeff

How big of a boat is it.A small boat can be sanded.If the paint is as thick as you say you may want to sand blast or chemical strip.Many good paints available at west marine like epoxy 1 part or 2 part epoxy.I used something called Toplac and the results were great. Charlie

It kinda depends on what type(s) of paint. You might be able to scrape it off with a putty knife. I'd think any proper boat paint would need to be sanded off.. Heck, you'd just have to sand it down until you're reached good bonded paint and then repaint..

I used a product called "peelaway 7" on my 66 Glasspar. My boat had several coats of paint on it and this stuff worked miracles. You simply apply paste, wait a few hours, scrape off with a palstic scraper, and rinse w/ water. <br /> It is designed for use on fibreglass and gelcoats and will not cause damage. It also removed several coats of varnish and paint from the mahogony in the cabin. The wood looks fantastic and the gelcoat was ready for good paint after a quick sanding with 250 grit sand paper.<br /> You can purchase it from Sherwin-Williams for $49.00 a gallon. More than enough to remove paint from a 17 1/2 foot cuddy cabin and its wood.
