How to remove/reinstall oil seals?

The Seloc manual describes a special tool (P/N YB6096) to remove and another (P/N YB6198) to reinstall the lower oil seals on my '85 115HP two stroke.

Can I safely tap the seals out with a dowel rod or ? and reinstall them with the back of appropriately sized socket or do I really need those tools?

Any other tips or warnings?

Thanks.

These are the two seals at the bottom of the powerhead, mounted in the lower seal housing, not lower unit seals.

This engine is the 115ETLK, '85 that I posted about several times late last year. I got it disassyed and the block shipped off to Hydrotec in Nixa, Mo before the cold weather shut down operations in my unheated garage. They bored all four and sold me four piston sets, a gasket kit and some odds and ends all for a very reasonable price.

The nice weather for the last few weeks let me get the block reassyed and nearly ready to put back on the lower unit. I just need a little coaching on the oil seals.

I would never have got this far without the info and encoragement from this forum.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I have worked on cars and small engines, but I have never overhauled an outboard or ever changed this type of seal. I was a little worried that a booby trap might be hidden in that innocent looking seal housing. When the manual starts in about special tools it always makes me nervous.

I am really eager to finish this overhaul as I promised the wife that we would watch the fireworks from Truman Lake at Warsaw, Mo this July. Since I frightened her the last time I had her on a boat (a long story involving a sail boat, a broken trasmission and a fast moving thunderstorm) everything must be broken in, tested, and trustworthy.

In the event, it was a trivial job. The old seals pulled out with finger pressure and the new ones pressed in with a firm push from the back of a couple of sockets.

Now I have to get my father in law over here to help me man handle this power head onto the lower unit.
