Greetings all,

I did search for forums first but my starter is still attached to the block.

I have a 1988 OMC 3.0L Cobra on a Four Winns.

I have removed a bolt from the bracket (which is attached to the block) that is attached to the front of the starter (first bolt).

I have also removed a bolt from the back side of the motor (this bolt runs parallel with the crank shaft) (second bolt).

There is another both at a 90 degree angle from the bottom of the starter (very tough to get at), does that one need to come off also? Is there anything else I'm missing? Thanks-Brian

Put the bolt back in the bracket before removing the last one as it will take the pressure off the bolt when the starter starts to drop and make it easier

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply Jeff!

So, just to be sure, does the third bolt that I have NOT removed yet (the really tough one on the bottom of the starter)?

Thanks again!

I believe so. You will probably need a small wrench and twist around until you can get onto it. As soon as you start loosening it you will notice the starter getting loose so you will know for sure. You need to put the bolt back in the bracket that holds the front of the starter though

Follow up message: the task is done

In order to remove the starter you must first remove two bolts from the bottom of the starter (the two bolts I am referring to are near the "bendix" end of the starter and we harder than heck to remove, I needed a mirror to see were I need to place the sockets). As Jeff pointed out, you then remove the third bolt that holds the starter to the engine block.

In order to remove the bolts I did need to move some of the cables and fuel lines. Removing a starter from my Jeep is MUCH easier!!!

Jeff, once again thanks for your prompt help.

In Swahili, boat means "impossible to do". Glad you got it done. As time goes by you will learn to "feel" the nut or bolt. Welcome to iboats

If you haven't put it back in yet, put some anti-seize on the threads. Have mercy on the next guy to replace it....
