So the trigger was bad on my Mariner/Merc but to replace it I have to pull off the flywheel. Now that I have the retaining bolt off how do I pull the flywheel off. I'm assuming I need to use a puller of some sort but I can't figure exactly how as I don't see any bolt holes to mount a puller to.

Also does anyone know the oil capacity of the lower gear box?

Thanks

Dude unblot the flywheel after marking it at top dead center so it goes back correctly. after removing the flywheel the trigger on most engine,s can be removed if carefully streched over the flywheel hub. Some may need to have the hub pulled. You can get the puller at autozone rental free. Get your money back when done. It looks like a peace sign 3 to 4 prongs and get the right bolts for your hub. some come with them some do not They must be long enough to reach the puller. The lower should hold about a quart filling from the bottom up until oil comes out of the top hole after you remove both screws upper and lower. After oil ozzes out gently tighten the bottom screw and giv the oil time to settle some addition oil can be put in to top it off at that point. Make sure it is full. It can then be pressure tested for leakage

I assume TDC is determined on the top cylinder?

Ok, so I have stripped the engine down this far. Now I need to get this center hub with the 8 bolt holes removed to get the trigger assembly, that's the black plastic ring below it, off. Anybody know how to remove this animal so I can change the trigger out????

I hope you marked the flywheel as to match up with the center hub that is still on the crankshaft. A puller/ lift ring can be bought on Ebay. It screwes down into the center of the hub and has a bolt that is used to pull the hub free without taking the outer flywheel off as you have done. It also comes with a bolt/ ring that is used for lifting the motor off the boat or stand to move the motor around easy. That puller/ lift ring only cost around $35.00 and can be used on several other motors as well. Just Ebay search for outboard flywheel puller should get a listing for the puller.

I have marked all the parts and have the engine set on TDC ..I was finally able to remove it by using a solid 2 bolt steering wheel puller. ...however I'm not sure how I would be able to remove the trigger assembly without removing the flywheel and stator assembly anyway (or am i missing something ) my issue now is I have found a couple deteriorating wires on the stator assembly ,,, its always something!

Any deteration of the wires will let them leak or fire to ground and this will deffinatly cause the motor to not run as it should. It is almost imposable to repaire them and best to repl;ce the unit as a whole. You might want to try the salvage yards listed in the STICKY TOP SECRET or old mers dot com to see if anybody has one for your motor.
