How to remove the oil seals/retainers?

I have a 1985 90hp Johnson and am resealing the lower unit. This is my first lower unit job and I can't seem to figure out how to remove the oil retainers from the bearing carrier on the driveshaft. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I pulled mine out with a pair of pliers and a wedge, it mangled the old ones but what does that matter. Be careful not to score the shaft itself or the carrier. My motor is a 1983 75 HP.

Do I pull from the top or bottom of the carrier?

I pulled them from the top, on mine there were two seals, back to back. Check out the schematic for your motor at evinrude.com

On the schematic it lists the carrier and seals as an assembly and doesn't show them separately back to back like it does for the propshaft carrier. Does this mean mine is supposed to stay as an assembly, because the seals seem to be held between the bearings and the carrier's top by a lip.

If you are looking at the 1985 90HP Gearcase on the BRP parts catalog site, the seals are #7 and # 8 on the diagram and are in fact shown as back to back.

You're right, sorry about that, I failed to connect the dots on the dotted line. So I can just pull them out the top?
Then when I reinstall, use gasket sealer on the outer edges and grease between them??

Be careful doing that; the carrier is expensive to replace. I have been pulling the carrier out and doing those seals on the bench by pushing them out from behind. I put a small amount of sealer on the sides of the new seals.Some gear oil on the shaft when putting the carrier back will help protect the seals. The big o'ring for the carrier should be in your seal kit.

By the way it is always a good idea to change the oil fill gaskets and the shift shaft gasket when you have it apart.

Been busy with school and Easter. Hopefully I'll have time after tomorrow. What do you mean by oil fill gaskets? and about the shift shaft... I suspected that that could have been where my leak was, still not sure though. Is just a little o-ring and a grommet suppposed to seal where the shaft enters the gearcase? It seems like these wouldn't do the job.

The oil fill gaskets are the nylon gaskets for the two screws on the lower unit for filling the gearcase oil, they should be changed every time you drain the gearcase oil. The shift shaft gasket is at the top of the carrier where the shift shaft enters the lower unit it is a round "donut" gasket that prevents water from entering through the shift shaft rod it is embedded in the metal carrier. When removing the shift shaft rod be sure to count the revolutions of the thread when putting it back together. The rod is threaded at the end and this is also a shift adjustment so for instance if it takes three and one half turns to take out make sure it is three and one half to put back in. I had a similar water intrusion problem where I changed the driveshaft seals and it turned out to be the shift shaft gasket ($.75) part that drove me crazy.

I had someone quote me 4 hrs labor @$70 per hour to replace the seals on the prop shaft, using my parts. That sounds like a lot of time to pull 2 bolts and replace 2 seals and an O-ring. Am I wrong?

I thought that was to what you were referring, but wanted to make sure.
And as for the shift shaft seal, when I first lifted up that large grommet(#55) there was a thin(and loose) o-ring that didn't seem to be sealing anything properly. I am assuming this is the part #25 to which you are referring. The replacement o-ring I have is much tighter and thicker. Now I guess I'm confused as to where that o-ring is supposed to go. On the schematic it is shown underneath the cover(#24), I found the old one above the cover, and if I understood you right, you said it was embedded in the cover?

I just did this on my 84 xp 150, first clean the unit real well and wash with water, and dry as well as possible, here is the secret part, turn on the OVEN and allow to heat to 250 or so and heat the carrier in the oven for about 15 minutes. have a long flat ended punch small hammer and an oven mit ready. remove from the heat and set up off the end about 1-2" to allow the seal, bearing to exit, 2- 2x4's work well. with the oven mit on, hold the carrier and the punch in the same hand gently work the seals out first tapping with the hammer. then work the bearing out in the same way. you want to set the punch to the inside edges of the bearing to avoid scoring the inside of the carrier. work gently and these parts will come out nicely the carrier may have to be re-heated once for the bearing. if you can get the bearing #'s before punching them out and you can save alot of cash by purchasing the bearings at a local bearing supply house, mine were less that 30$ I know the oven seems weird but it works, you can freeze your new bearings and heat the carrier to install if they are really tight but they are still rather simple to install with a socket and hammer

On mine there was a race within the carrier (#24) I had to use a pick to get the old gasket out and the new one looked too big as you described, this is intentional, the new gasket is bigger due to a design change by evinrude because they were all leaking. Your lower end is a little different than mine, but similar enough to try to explain it.

Still can't get the seals out of the bearing carrier and not so confident in putting in the oven. Any other suggestions.

After much pounding, the seals are free. Thanks for the help. Now its on to the prop shaft bearing carrier. Any ideas for getting it out? I don't own a puller. (How much does one cost?)
