Hi all, this is my first request for help and new to the forum!! I recently bought a 98 merc 225 motor and need to remove the tilt tube and turn it around to hook up my steering cable. I was told it was very easy and to tap it out with a hammer. I have had no luck at all getting it out, with the motor mounted or hanging on my hoist. Am I missing something? I am very mechanical and getting very agrivated, Help!!

Re: how to remove tilt tube

We don't do many V/6 engines but I thought the tubs are the same on both ends if the problem in not enough thread for the cable to attach to try loosing one nut and tighten the other to pull the tube over if the engine came with plastic nuts get a steel one to pull the tube it should also work to break the tube loose if you need to turn it around

One nut is bigger than the other on one end. the short end has only about 3/4 inch of thread while the other has about 1.5 inch. the end with the most thread is at the end of the thread line so I cant tighten more. I noticed that if I get a new tube it has equel thread on both sides which is the way I need to go since I got frustrated and beat the snot out of the existing tube with a block of wood and hammer and messed up some thread. any other ideas? thanks. curt

In as much as the engine tilts up and down it must be free on the swival bracket you can tilt the engine and see if its free ont the center or the ends probablt stuck at the ends try a little heat to see if thet will move and if everthing else fails you may have to drill the ends if you do us undersize bites and work your way up with care not to ream the hole in the castings

You will need to take the weight of the motor off the tilt tube, or it will not come out. Hang the motor from a tree or header, and then remove one of the nuts, and pull the tilt tube out.
