I've got a plastic 5 gallon fuel tank that I use as a backup.

The pickup line inside the tank has fallen (broken?) off the fuel line connector fitting. The tank does not have a gauge, only a quick connect fitting that is somehow fastened to the tank (no visible fasteners).

Is it possible to repair this or is it time to find a new tank?

Has no one had to repair one of these before?

Re: How to repair fuel pickup on plastic portable tank

Had the same thing happen on an old tank. The pickup line broke down chemically. Couldn't find any replacement tubing, either to large or to small. There was a compression fitting at the top, but it wasn't designed for reuse.

Ended up buying a replacement at my marina, no cheap, but cheaper than a new tank by a lot. The tubing had a good 3/4" overlap on the stem that it mated with, and was so tight I dought a compressing ring would have made any diference.

The tank was branded Quicksilver (Mercury).

It was suggested to me that the old materials were affected by the alcohol in the fuel. Seems possible as the tubing on the replacement was made from a different plastic.

Hope that helps.

Head on over to Canadian Tire, or Walmart, pick up a new plastic can, or find a good used metal one at a yard sale. By the time you screw around with that plastic one you'll waste more time than it's worth. ...... or ........... um ....... well that's what I'd do. If I was near you I'd sell you a tank cheap, I have a few, but I won't be in that area for a long time.
