I just got a 1970 55hp Seaking, MADE BY CHRYSLER that I got with the boat. I'm told that they're the same engine. I'm not much of a mechanic and was hoping, since its the same as the Chrysler if someone would give me directions on how to replace the impeller. It looks like you have to take the lower unit apart. Please help...

On the motor leg there should be 6 bolts and nuts holding the covers on. Remove them. Remove three of the four bolts holding the lower unit onto the motor leg and loosen the last one about half way. There will be a two inch or so nut holding the upper and lower shift linkage together. This needs to be un screwed to separate the two linkages. The nut has both regular and reverse threads on opposite ends. This is kind of confusing so go both ways with it. The nut uses a 7/16 inch wrench. Slowly make the linkages longer and as you are doing so remove more of the bolt holding the lower unit onto the motor leg. Eventually they will separate.

Remove the three or four screws holding the water pump in place. remove the water pump cover and the impeller. Make sure the impeller key stays in the drive shaft. lay new impeller on impeller key and put the water pump on top of the impeller. With firm pressure push down on the water pump while slowly turning the driveshaft clockwise till the water pump seats then put the bolts back on and reverse this procedure to replace the lower unit onto the motor leg.

A couple things to be careful with. The water tube must line up with the grommet going up to the powerhead and fit onto the top of the water pump. Also if you force the shift linkage while attaching the lower unit to the motor leg you can damage it. This is a lot easier if you have a second person or build stuff on the ground that you can rest the lower unit on while attaching the shiftlinkage nut. Your motor may have a cotter pin for the shifter but I am pretty sure the 1970 has the nut I have described. After the lower unit is attached firmly to the motor leg you will have to adjust nut to neutral first then maybe fine tune as you shift to find equal shifting distance between forward and reverse. Sounds hard but it is not too bad. It is lots easier with a manual.

Eurolarva, thanks so much for the information. The only manual I could find was a disk on ebay. It gave a lot of detailed well explained info on many items but only showed a parts breakdown on the impeller. I sure would like to find a more comprehensive manual.

eurolarva, isnt there a "hidden " bolt under the trim tab? Get the trim tab off and look under where it was and I think there is a 7/16 in. hex head bolt holding the very end of the cavation plate. Iam not sure about his motor .

Nope no bolt. Only the four to the motor leg and the shift shaft nut.
