My neighbor recently purchased a 1965 aristocraft boat. 4 cylinder mercruser alpha one drive. took the boat out and it overheated. shut it down before any damage. not pumping water at all. I've worked on cars for over 15 years and can replace the waterpump in my 40 hp evinrude outboard no problem. but these sterndrives are a new animal to me. Is this something I could do and where could I get some directions to do this. Or is this a pain in the a....?Thanks for your input. Really a cool boat when it ran:mad:

yes you can do it , first drain your outdrive oil ,then remove the bottom part of the lower unit ,you will see the water pump in there,if im not mistaken there are 5 bolts holding the lower part of the drive on ,to see the impeller you must first remove the plate that slides down over the shaft . there is 1 maybe 2 bolts that hold that on . once removed you can see what you have to do , remember this ,when installing the new impeller turn ti counter clockwise so the teeth on the impeller are going clockwise this prevent damage to the new impeller during start up the first time . good luck ,its very hard at all .

Re: how to replace this????

you need s/m #1. all the info you need is in that book.
you also may have, from looking at a drive application chart, a mercruiser 1A EZ or 1B EZ drive. i don't know the differences, but i'd be sure to figure out what you have and find out about parts availabilty. a 1 drive is pretty common with most parts available. a 1A or B EZ i don't know.

need to know what engine to get a better idea of what ya got. i referenced 1965 and 66, 110 and 120 hp 153 cid engine which i believe are 4 cyl. GM engines.

so is it a funliner i/o he's got. pics?

congrats on the aristocraft. i'm kinda partial to them.. ;)

You might want to pull the drive and do the impeller on the bench. I think that is a little easier, and then you can grease the U-joints on the drive shaft, check the gimbal bearing and examine the bellows. The only extra tool you would need is an alignment tool (ebay about $40) for putting it back together. Great boat!

Terry what falls out of alignment when you pull the drive off. I can't understand why you need this alignment tool??

Rockyman are you from down under?

On a Mercruiser ALWAYS start any removal of drive or parts of it with control in FORWARD gear.

When putting on the top housing over the impeller, first give the impeller a shot of silicone or some soap or something lubby. Turn the vertical drive shaft CLOCKWISE so the impeller veins go counter clockwise.

No. 1 drive 4 5/8 nuts on sides, one in front, pull trim tab one bolt under there and 2 more 5/8 nuts in front of that on bottom of cavitation plate.

Water pump housing has 4 fasteners. 2 are 3/8 one is 7/16 the back one will be either a 5/16 head long screw or a bolt.

Tighten them firm but don't crank them down as there is NO metal sleeve inside to let you know when to stop.

Don't forget to replace the quad ring on the upper surface (starboard side) of the lower unit. Use a little gasket adhesive to hold it in place.

Nothing will fall out of alignment. It is recommended to check your alignment each time you pull your drive. Doing so can catch any misalignment issues and save an expensive coupler replacement.

Re: how to replace this????

ah, found some info on 1A and B and EZ. looks like it might be a difference in gear housings types. from pp 6A4 in s/m #1.

model 1- stright cut bevel gear. serial no. 1684187 & below have 4 1/4'' gear housing outer diameter; serial no. 1684188 & above have a 4 3/4'' gear housing outer diameter

model 1-1A-1B-1C-60-80-90- spiral cut bevel gear

1A-1B-1C-120-140-160-165-888- spiral cut bevel gear w/E-Z shift. serial no. 1776349 and above have an E-Z shift gear housing.

Water pump housing has 4 fasteners. 2 are 3/8 one is 7/16 the back one will be either a 5/16 head long screw or a bolt.

Tighten them firm but don't crank them down as there is NO metal sleeve inside to let you know when to stop.
or ya could read the s/m which lets ya in on the facts that the ft. fastener is torqued to 35-40 in/lbs, the two side fasteners are torqued to 25-30 in/lbs. and the aft fastener is torqued to 15-20 in/lbs. doing it with a in/lb torque wrench assures it's fastened down proper...
