my trim started acting up, would go down but not up. Trouble shot the electronics using the manual, and I think its either the switch or wiring to the pump. Both up and down work fine when "hot wired" from the red post to either the green/white and blue white post. Also, I don't get voltage to the blue/white post when the up trim is pressed. I would like to check the switch, but I can't figure out how to get the throttle handle apart. Throttle is a standard unit unit with a red grip to get it into gear, a disengage button at the pivot point, and the trim switch is toggle thumb operated. I could post a picture if that would help. Boat is a 1994 Four Winns 180 horizon, 5.0L VP, SX drive.

thanks

Re: how to replace throttle trim switch?

No takers on this one? Can anyone point me toward a diagram or something? I can feel a scew on the backside of the lever, if I get this out with this get me started? Also, when I put the lever all the way back, I can see a set screw deep inside the hub of the pivot- if I take this out, will the lever come off the pivot hub?

thanks

Depends on which control you have. Post a picture. Are you sure the switch is bad?

OK, I'll get a picture this evening and post it. assuming it is either the switch or the connections on the switch because the connections at the pump and the relays are working fine. Only way to confim is get the switch out and look for connection issues and test the swithc with a meter.

thanks, Eric

How do you know the relays are working ok on the pump. If your switch doesn't work, how did you test it?
Quite honestly, I doubt your switch is bad, Exactly what kind of problem are you having, and do you have the trim pump with the relay/circuit breaker unit like this?

Re: how to replace throttle trim switch?

yes, that is the one I have, and I can jump the red (power) lead to both the green/white and/white terminals and it goes up and down as it should, acoording to the troubleshooting section in the FSM. If the relays were bad, the hot-wiring wouldn't work, I would get the same result as trying to use the switch. Its certainly possible that it is the wiring between the switch and the pump, but I can't test that until I can get to the switch, and do a continuity check on both the switch and the wiring.

am I missing something?

thanks, Eric

That sounds like the proper procedure, guess I'm not used to people actually following the manual ........ it doesn't happen very often around here.
Have you checked (Disconnect and look at it) the connector near the pump for the trim harness going forward to the control? That thing has a bad habit of going bad due to corrosion.

Here is my throttle, the only screws are one on the back of the lever and a small set screw on the hub accessed through a small access hole on the bottom the hub assembly. any advice appreciated.

Looks more like an OMC control than Volvo. I can't help you with that one.

Re: how to replace throttle trim switch?

That OMC control was used on early Volvos. I know because I had one on my "LK" series in a 98 boat. Good luck finding the switch if its bad. I replaced that control and mailed my switch to another iBoater who was having the same problem you are having.

You can remove the switch after you take the arm off and get at the screws on the back of the arm. That's the easy part. Finding the switch is the hard part.

Here is a good set of instructions:

Thanks! I would never have figured that out on my own. That is an interesting site, thanks again. If I can't find the switch, I'll put an aftermarket on the dash.

Re: how to replace throttle trim switch?

issue resolved for free! it ended up being a connector in a weird place I would never have guessed, but I only found it after tracing the wiring harness after actually testing the switch and finding out it was OK. Thanks for all the advice!
