How to select used 200HP?

I'm looking to replace my 1987 200 HP Evinrude. I do not boat as much as in the past, and don't want to pay for a new engine I would only use a dozen times a year, so I am considering a used motor. I am looking for recommendations on how to select a motor - what to check and how to check it. Are some brands more reliable than others? Do I hire a mechanic to look at it? What if it is not on the boat? How do I know if the price is reasonable? Also where should I look for one? Should I contact a dealer, etc.? I live in the panhandle of Florida - not in/near a large city so I'm wondering if looking in one of the larger north or central Florida cities is practical (distance wise) and how to go about it. Any recommendations on manufacturers? I hesitate to buy an Evinrude again since the one I have has extensive corrosion - but on the zincs - I haven't dissolved one in 25 years - but the lower unit sure dissolves! Things like that I want to avoid. I welcome any suggestions how to proceed.

Thanks in advance for your help.
