Hello again

I just got a Actron digital timing light for my arsenal of tools.http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16315
I have the Tohatsu manual for 1 and 2 cylinder engines. This is my first time using a timing light.

I'm prolly going to feel abit dumb when I get this done but I need a general walkthru and want to do it right.

I wanted to to check and/or tweak my idle and in gear RPMs into spec.

For the 3.5B2
Manual says...

*Turn the running adjusting screw one turn clockwise and start engine.
(1 turn from what postion?)

*Return thottle lever to its closed position and adjust screw until speed is correct. Turn screw clockwise for + speed and counterclockwise for - speed.

NOTE:How can I get a reading of the flywheel to obtain RPMs? Seems blocked by starter recoil assby?

For the NS5B
Manual says...

*Tighten pilot adjusment screw slightly, loosen it to adjust to the standard setting. Set RPM by regulating the throttle and stop screw while monitoring the engine speed with a tach.
(Does that mean tighten it all the way slightly? And how many turns out is standard setting?)

*Set pilot adjust screw to a position where the engine speed is highest within _+ 1/4 turn of the reference position.
(I'm lost, need help)

*Set the specified speed with a throttle stop screw.
(I'm lost, need help)

NOTE: Set carburetor pilot adjusting screw with clutch on.
(I'm lost, need help)

Thanks again,

No timing light needed. Timing is non-adjustable, and has nothing to do with idle on these. A good tach is a good idea. Use the tach readout on the light, forget the strobe.

The 3.5B idle stop screw is only a stop for the shutter; curved-end screw. The manual assumes starting at 1 turn from not activating the shutter atop at all. Set to the idle that works for you, using the "open it up, adjust, then return to idle" method in the manual.

On the 5B, that is stanndard technique. Gently seat the pilot screw, back out to "standard". (I'm on vacation, no manuals with me, forgot the precise turns, probably 1-1/2 or 2). Then adjust that pilot to max RPM mixture. As idle gets too low or too high, you may need to adjust the throttle stop. Again, use the "open it up, adjust, then return to idle" method for the idle stop. You will probably find that about 1/8 turn rich from max idle mix setting will give best "driveability", i.e. least flat spot.

"With clutch on" means "in gear".

Hey Pvanv

First off, Thanks for helping out while relaxing on vacation!!!:)

I grabbed this timing light cause it had the build it tach on back. Figured I'd "kill two birds with one stone" instead of buying a light and a tach . Can I still use this timing light I bought for this work ?

Sorry to ask even thought I had the manual, I know its prolly something you could do in your sleep :)

Thanks again,

Just use the tach feature...
