how to set points gap and dwell ???

hey guys

have a 1985 mercruiser 3.0 and just put new points in and now i can get a high rpm out.. engine bogs alot to a stallin point.... the shop told me to adjust to 20 thousands but i have no idea how to adjust it

plz help me !1

With the cap, rotor and ignition off. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt just enough to turn the distributor so that the wiper arm of the points is sitting on the nearest actuating cam lobe on the distrbutor shaft (if possible scribe a line at the base so you can return the distributor to this location before moving distributor). Tighten down distributor and adjust the points to the proper gap. Loosen distributor and rotate back to your scribe mark. Start engine and with your dwell meter, double check the dwell angle and adjust as needed. Opening gap on points lowers the dwell. Check and adjust timing if needed.
