No clue how old the fuel is... Am assuming it isn't older than a year. Should i dump it all?

If it's less than a year get some marine Stabil. Probably snake oil, but it works for me.

If it's starting on the gas that's there just add more oil and fresh gas.

If it stalls then the idle is probably low, should be 750-800 in gear, motor warm.

The part of the shifter that says pull for neutral, grab that and pull straight out. Then push it forward or back(works the idle both ways).
Then turn key to start pushing in the key to choke.

Do a compression test just to make sure it's ok.J

with a new old boat purchase you should immediately change the -
oil
fuel
oil fuel mix
spark plugs
impeller
lower end oil
with out even thinking about it. Gas starts to turn into water in about 2-3 weeks and is bad after 90 days.
check your idle screw, could explain the die during start, stop issue. Like jerry said, should be about 800 rpm

dont assume the previous owner put new fluid and parts in just for you... :)

Re: How to start engine 85hp 1987 Force

Guys really appriciate your help on this.
I managed to get the boat idling fine with muffs on (not the same as in the water in gear, I know) but ended up not having time to put the boat in the water before I had to leave.
It is now stored with my extended family. Is there any basic winterizing I can ask them to do. Or should I have a mechanic do it. Also should I have the mechanic go ahead and drain the fuel and do a compression test or are these both things I can wait and do in the spring?
thanks again.

1000's of articles on winterizing the boat...easy to do on the outboard if your comfortable working on it. if your not running the boat, no reason to run a compression test until later i guess...unless your already paying for it?
