Hi All,
I need a little help. I just bought a fishing boat with a Ted Williams outboard motor. I never have a boat before and never started one. Please give me detail instruction on how to start the motor as I have never done it before.

I don't know the year or model of the motor, but there are some specs and writing on the motor.

7.5 air cooled ted williams
* cluck drive
* Twist grip throttle
* Shallow drive

Twist grip throttle have (stop, shiftzone, start and fast) marking on it.

There is switch for drive and neutral

There is a idle adjust for lean and rich

There is pull choke

It currently have have a tank of fuel. I will have it on a stand to test it.

Do I need to put it in a bucket of water? Please give step by step instruction on how I should set the switches before I pull the cord and what to do after it starts.

Thanks.

Yes you need water to start it. The water pump impeller (only used for cooling the leg) will burn out very rapidly if you don't. You need the water to cover up a couple inches over the top of the flat part above the prop. Really it should be past the joint between the lower unit (part with propeller) and the midsection.

Gas is mixed with oil right?
Set the idle adjust to the middle for now.

If the outboard has a built in tank, open vent on the gas cap and open the petcock. If it's a seperate tank, open the vent and pump the primer bulb until firm.

Put the engine in neutral.

Pull out the choke knob (so the choke plate in the carb closes completely).

Set the throttle to 'start'.

Pull cord. If it doesn't start on the fourth pull, suspect something's wrong.

If the engine starts and immediatly stops, push the choke back in and try pulling a couple more times.

Once the engine starts, push the choke knob back in (depends on engine, but usually you have to be quick with this. Some engines like to be half choked for a little while while they warm up.) and idle down the engine. Once it warms up, fiddle with the rich/lean control to get the best idle. You want to set it a little rich, especially if the engine hesitates when you throttle up.

I think that covers it. With two strokes, reving them in neutral can cause all sorts of problems so don't do it. If you want to test out the engine a bit, put it in gear.

Good instructions. I would add that you might want to check for spark, too. Pull a plug and reattach to its wire. Hold the plug with pliers right up against the cylinder or other convenient spot. Have someone pull the starter rope and watch for spark at the spark plug tip. Repeat for each cylinder/plug. If you have no spark, time to pull the flywheel and check the magneto/ignition...may just need a good cleaning/resetting.
