I live on a pretty small road, 25mpg speed limit. On the corner theres a store and its the "back way" to get to the movie theater.

People seem to think this 1/8th mile stretch is a drag strip. I get on average 5 people a night doing 45mph+ i've even had a side by side drag race between two civics in front of my house, appartently using my mailbox as a starting point.

Any ideas on how to slow people down? They set up a speed trailer once that helped until they took it down. Cops dont patrol it at all and dont seem to want to. Sure theres more important roads to do things on.

Ive put 2x6s out before and they work surprisingly well, untill someone drags them off. Any other ideas?

Re: How to stop speeding on my road.

Do's:
Start with the police - call and complain - often
Send a letter to your planning commission stating the problem and asking for their help with solutions.
Attend your local government monthly meeting and bring up your complaint.
Eventually, they'll take action.

Don'ts:
Place anything in the street which may cause an accident and bring you a lawsuit.
Stand in the road screaming at the vehicles as they race down the road.
Block the road or impede traffic flow.

get yourself a road work machine and turn the whole road into rumble strips.

A speed bump would solve the problem, but be a pain for your neighbors though.

A street by my old office was the "back way" and the city installed 6 huge speed bumps, solved the speeding and I bet it also cut down on the traffic too. Double speed bumps will surely persuade people to stay away.

Erect a tall fence, make the front of the house the back of the house.
Double glazed windows, heavy curtains.
Live and let live.

or move to a dead end street.

This is absolutely, positively, without a doubt, the best way to proceed. Take heed.

By all means, DO NOT take matters into your own hands, as we found out the hard way. Living on a 25 mph residential road myself with a ton of small children playing in their yards (mine included), speeders were far too common so one evening, my next-door neighbor decided to chuck a full can of soda at a high school kid doing 80 and unbelieveably, he hit the right quarter panel. The punk actually slowed down but soon realized about 15-20 EXTREMELY mad dad's would have beat him senseless so he decided to slowly continue down the road. We were so mad that WE called the cops. Ironically, 2 minutes later, our city's finest paid our neighborhood a friendly visit. The first thing out of the officer's mouth was "Who threw the can?" Since we didn't tell them anything about a can being thrown, we were a little puzzled. Anywho, that punk actually called the cops on us too!!! Since all us dad's played stupid and denied anything being thrown, the cop decided to ask my 4 year-old what had happened and without hesitation, he pointed to my neighbor and said "he threw a can and hit a car"!!! My neighbor was therefore arrested but the charges were later dropped because there were just too many witnesses who all believed the car was traveling well over 80 mph. Moral, if you're gonna throw something at a moving car, try not to hit it!!!!

There's nothing worst then paying taxes and having a problem and the cops won't do anything. Then when you take matters into your own hands, you get in trouble!

We camp off the Ohio River on a creek which is no wake. We get people all day long that are on plane going by. One day we had the game warden (who's a family friend) down on our dock while on duty yelling at people and they give him the finger. He didn't have his boat or otherwise he'd go after them.

People today simply do not have any respect for other peoples' property and safety.

does anyone own a car resembling the current police cars in your area. sometimes simply putting them near the end of your driveay or slightly hidden behind abush looking like a cop does wonders. we had a similar problem neighbor had a crown vic looked like an unmarked car we set it near the crest of the hill on our road and WOW brake lights everywhere people slamming on em thinking it was a cop. worked perfect!

People only respect what they are forced to respect.. and the reasons stated above are why they could care less.. they know they have free rein.

Had to fix that for ya :D

first never count on the cops to do anything for you, like polititions.
the job looks to me like unemployment with a free car to drive.
wife and i relocated to a small town down south.
cops don't even use turn signal, the cell is in that hand.
i have it on disc, my truck has front and rear cam on lap top.
my house has security cams recording also.
no not paranoid, sadly that's about what it takes today.
two of the infrared cams are close to the street so as to get licence numbers and a good look at the vehicles.
kind of like you we had billybob in his red mustang doing a burn out and kids playing along the street.
i called 911 and told them a cop lives half a block away and had to see this but did nothing., he was in the squad.
pi**ed him and his b buddy off real bad, didn't like the 911 idea.
i told them get used to it, i don't trust you guys and 911 is documentation.
told them never will i call you, it will always be 911.
the one hasn't seen his wanger since he was two years old and had to get helen keller training to urinate.
if you have the proof right there in living color, you can force the issue.
funny thing on infrared security cams.
one evening a spider crawled over one of the cam lens and scared the heck out of me.

I agree with the advice to not take matters into your own hands.

Try talking at a town meeting, present some video tape of speeding cars. The road department will install the "wide" speed bumps that don't bother you much when doing 20-25 mph, but will bottom out a car doing 35. A few roads around here were like yours. The speed bumps took care of it 100%

Funny thing is lots of the road racers have lowered their cars so even a normal pump will rip off their spoilers and under body lighting.

Re: How to stop speeding on my road.

This is what seems to work for us.
E-mail and send a letter to your local road commission, politicians and police dep't. and city council.

In the letter state very clearly that what's going on is a severe safety threat to the people living on your block and if anyone ever gets hurt or killed your letter is a document.
This will scare the crap out of them because they can then all be sued if they ignore your letter and something bad happens.

It will seem even more formal if you have the post office require them to sign for it.
