Best not to take matters into your own hands.........BUT, ;)

We had a problem much like this 4 houses, two on each side of a short road, about 1000' and many speeders. so one weekend my buddy next to me and I go to Home Depot, load up 20 bags of pothole patch and two hours later, PRESTO, instant speed bump:D

It has been there for over two years with no complaints and a lot less speeding.

Take matters in your hand and keep complaining to your local government. Talk to your neighbors and get a speed bump put in. People complain when they get a ticket and then complain when police are not around to give a ticket.
I talked with a young deputy the other day. His beat was over 150 miles alone, and he goes call to call.

People complain that a cops not around when you need them. Gee I work in a town of 30k people. There are four patrol officers working. Two guys get tied up on a shoplifter, then throw in a domestic, neighbor dispute, car accident, custody dispute etc.... We are lucky if we have 1 car up to handle any in progress calls.

City board meetings are public, go and speak your peace. Explain its a danger to your kids and a liability to the city. Be reasonable explain the police are busy but a speed bump does not cost much.

I have small kids and feel your pain. I've found that standing at the end of the driveway and making direct eye contact in a stern but reserved manor helps. Most people will slow down if there speeding is just lack of awareness. The real problem is the 18-20 year olds who feel the "need for speed". Even if you get them to stop next year there will be a fresh batch of them to do the same thing again. For this reason I think speed humps will be the only long term solution. That sounds like a long shot however.
