how to tell auto starter from marine starter?

the starter on my boat has a sticker attached that states that the starter meets marine standards and it is the original starter so i know it is ok. the sticker is coming off which got me to thinking about how to visually tell if the starter on a boat is marine rated or not. if someone was looking to buy a used boat, how could they tell? by design? special markings on the housing? and what about the alternator? any special design features here too?

I'm curious to see what others say, but I think the only way to tell is to know the original price. If it was 2 or 3 times as much, it was a "marine" part...

The marine starter salutes you as you enter the boat. They usually have less hair than those hippie auto starters, too.

I believe the only REAL way to tell would be to disassemble it and look for the spark screen.

Otherwise, it would have to be the part number, or to look for a USCG stamp into the metal housing on the starter.

Ayuh,... It's actually a single ssteel plate you'll find behind the bendix drive....

The Alternators have screens that can be seen through the vents...

Distributers have screens if vented thru the base, or the little brass elbow vent in the caps...

It's All no doubt a Rip-Off,... But how much is a Life worth,..??..??...
