Hello,

I have boat sitting ashore and I need to test functionality of outboard motors in this condition (before it will go on the water)

How to do it?

The motors (2) are Yamaha 150

Appreciate your advices (I am not a pro in Outboards, I am radio engineer, still need to do it)

hi, thank you for your reply. Ok, 55 galon barrels. What hapopen if i turn the ignitiuon on right in the air. Will it harm engine instantly without water cooling?

Engine will not overheat immediately BUT the water pump impeller will fail due to not having any water in it to lubricate and cool it.

You can purchase a flushing attachment that you hook up to a garden hose to provide cooling water.

this is the simplest way. if setting the idle, it needs to be set higher than normal, as there is no back pressure on the exhaust. while testing do not exceed 1500 rpms. i start my engines on these a minimum of every two weeks. if they are not in use.

if you use the drum, keep the water running, because the engine is going to blow water out of the barrell.

Testing on a flushing adaptor won't tell you much. Neither will the barrel idea with engines that big. All you'll know is whether they start and shift. If the boat is trailered, take it to the water, back it in and run the engines under load.

I thought I was "all set" after a driveway test only to find out it ran like crap in the water under load.

Did you just buy this boat?
Has any service been done to the carbs or water pump?
Has it been sitting?

Do NOT rev it higher than 1500 or so without it being in water. Heed roscoe's advice about the water pump impellar running it dry just for a minute will damage it. Alden's experience is common - sounds great on the muffs, runs like crap under load.

A compression test can tell you about the condition of the motor. And inspection of spark plugs.

thank you greatly for all the advices. basically, the conclusion is outboards can be tested on the water only.

right...well, they can only be tested conclusively on the water...the on-shore stuff (good compression and good spark, starts and idles good, and tests of various components) can save you a wasted trip to the lake.
