The boat I have has a Johnson Super Sea-Horse 80hp on it. Model #V4AL-180, and serial #C501858.

Does anyone know what year it is, and secondly what is the procedure for changing the gear oils, and lastly what is the best way to run the notor while not in the lake?

Thanks
Paul

Re: How to test motor out of the water

Howdy Pvisser.

If that model number is V4AL-18 it is a 1966 long shaft.

The first step in any sort of service is to get a manual.

To replace the gearcase oil, remove both of the slotted plugs on the starboard side of the crankcase. The top one is a vent and the bottom one is the drain and fill.

After it has drained, pump oil into the lower hole until it overflows out of the top one. Replace the top plug including a new gasket. Then replace the bottom one, also with a new gasket.

I don't remember whether that engine can use "muffs" or not, but it must never be started without water being pumped by the impeller.

An outboard can only be fully tested under load. You can crank it up and confirm no-load operation on the muffs or with the lower end in at least 20 gallons of water. A garbage can is handy if you can't use muffs.

Good luck. :)

pvisser

Look to be a 1966 Model.

web page

Great advice below:

LOWER UNITS 101

You can put the lower unit in a barrel of water. Make sure the Water is high enough on the lower unit.

pvisser,

I can't help with the year - someone else on this site will help with that, but here are the other
2.

1)Get a shot manual.

2) Lower gear case lube change. Perform a search on this site and you will get exact instructions. This a very easy job.

3) Never - ever, run the motor without H20. The easy way to do this, is by purchasing a 'muff' stlye attachment that goes over the water intake slits at the bottom of the motor - connects to a garden hose. Hook it up, turn on the water, start the motor. You can buy this at ANY marine part store. Even the large sporting goods stores sell these. They run anywhere from $5 to $15.

Re: How to test motor out of the water

OK, I have got the motor to run, it sounds great. My concern is where should the water come out of while the engine is running? I see driibs and drabs (little spray) coming out of the exhaust port. I have the water level coming up to about 4 inches below the exhaust.

Thanks.
Paul
Live long and propel:)

pvisser,

Sounds like your pumping water.

To be sure, hold your hand on the top two cylinder heads while it's running. You should be able to hold your hand there for a few seconds. It's about 150 degrees.

Sounds like I'm pumping water, that's good to read, but where is the water supposed to be exiting the motor? I always thought that there would be a steady flow? am I wrong.

Paul

pvisser,

Your engine does not have a telltale. You'll only get spray out of the exhaust relief at idle.

The stream may pick up a bit while on plane.

Paul - Water will come out from a lot of places when running sitting on the trailer. This is normal.

Re: How to test motor out of the water

a coupke more questions about this ouboard.

I have a 4 foot wide by 4 foot deep barrel to place it into to test it out. How high should I bring the water up on shaft? Just above the gear vent hole?

Also the plywood between the motor mount and the actual boat is starting to rot, should I be concerned? The wood behind the motor is in good shape. And is this a big job?

Thanks

Re: How to test motor out of the water

The water level needs to be above the actual location of the water pump within the lower unit (so that the pump itself is submerged) not just above the inlet. These pumps push water very effectivley but they do not suck water.
