When i first start my motor i get a burst of blue smoke - after idling for a 30 seconds or so it turns clear as if very little oil is being burned - I have heard that at low idle the mercury mariners use very little oil but i would expect some oil use.

I am concerned that my oil injection system is not working properly - is there a way to test the system so as to not damage motor?

Thanks for any advice.

Its supposed to do that. You go down to a very low oil/gas ratio at idle.

Hook up a tank of premix and let the engine run on it while you pump the oil into a graduated cylinder through the pump. Detach the pump arm and let it run for a few minutes. Then reattach the pump arm and do the same thing. You'll have to get the exact amounts for your engine from the shop manual but a 2.0/150 needs about 7cc cc at a high idle in three minutes disconnected and about 2.5X that much connected.
