How to test VRO2?

I have a "New to ME" 1990 Evinrude 50 (TE50TLESF).

This motor came to be in several pieces. I have managed to get everything back together and rewired (thanks to posts on this board). But I am concerned with the VRO2 system.

How can I check that the system is working properly? I have heard that this motor will have a warning horn if there is a problem, but what if that fails? I would hate to ruin a motor over this.

I orginally was going to remove the VRO system, but when I found it was the VRO2 and I read some of the posts reguarding its performance I have decided to find room for the oil tank and pump.

Re: How to test VRO2?

Add oil to the tank and then put a mark or piece of tape at that level on the side of the tank. Add another quart of oil and put another mark at that level. Depending on how much fuel is on board, add an amount of oil to bring that mix to 50:1 (roughly will do). Run the engine at mid to wide open throttle and watch the oil level in the tank. It should consume oil at a 50:1 rate. If you run six gallons of fuel the oil level should drop 1/2 qt. The engine may smoke more with the double mixture, but you can run it safely to determine if the VRO is working and then top it off with regular fuel.

Do I need to worry about fouling plugs?

I like the idea of double protection.

Is there anything else I need to check out manually, before hooking up the wires and adding the oil?

Re: How to test VRO2?

VRO2 has a couple of warnings that should be tested. One is low oil and the other is no oil. Best way to test the low oil warning is with an empty oil tank turn the key to ON and you should hear the alarm beep for 1/2 second every 20 seconds. For the no oil alarm, make sure you have pre-mixed 50:1 in the fuel tank as suggested above. Then with oil in the tank and the engine running, pinch off the oil line going to the VRO. After all the oil is exhausted out of the oil line(Might take a while), alarm should sound rapidly on and off. If either of these fail to work, find out why before you use the VRO by itself...

Re: How to test VRO2?

There are two wires from my VRO tank. One is a ground, the other appears to plug into a brown wire on my wiring harness.

Should there be more wires?

Also, I am going to replace the hand bulb on the VRO line. Will any marine bulb work or is there a special one for the oil?

Use the correct bulb (Part # 0174157) . There are only 2 wires from the tank to the harness and of course, the wires from the pump to the harness.
