I am looking at a used 1975 70hp Evinrude on saturday. What is the proper/best way to transport the outboard in a trailer? thanks

Just pull the cowling off and lay it down on its side and tie it down so it doesn't bounce around. You can throw an old blanket under it if you want. I've hauled a lot of them in the back of my truck and even my Tahoe, (caught heck for that).

Yup, not much to wiorry about wiht the old 2 strokes, as shegger said just lay it on a blanket and keep it from bouncing around too much, it may leak a small amount of gas but that is all.

Watch you don't put it on the side with the gas hook up, wouldn't want to break that.
