How to undo shift rod??

I have a 1982 60hp Mariner 2 cyl 2 stroke - I have posted here because I think it is made by Yamaha. I am trying to repace the impeller but my manual is not great. I have removed the 4 external bolts, the bolt for the trim tab and the bolt underneath the trim tab. The lower unit is moving but somehow it is still connected at the opposite end from the prop -there is a lever slot at this end but I am reluctant to apply too much pressure until I have worked out what is still holding the lower unit to the motor. I am not sure how to disconnect the gear shift rod. This is probably what is holding the LU to the shaft. Any tips?

you probably fixed this by now, but. on my 1987 yamaha 30. the shift rod has a nut that connects the upper and lower shift rods. you can see it by shifting into forward (i think) , the rod moves down. then you see it at the front top on the lower unit. have someone shift while you look and you'll see the shaft move if it's the same design as my yamaha. that nut is like a coupling and is about an inch long and connects the two shafts. i'm guessing you turn it clockwise so it moves to the upper shaft. i'd spray it good with pb-blaster or something good well before attempting. that's the spot that rusts often. good luck

Eastportstar is correct. There is a jam nut and a turnbuckle style barrel nut holding the upper and lower shift rods together. Grease them good when you put them back together.
