I am winterizing the boat for the first time and need to make sure I do not forget anything. I assume just run antifreeze through the watermuffs and then drain the exchanger? I already put stable in the gas.

Howdy,

You can run anti-freeze thru it via a the "muffs" as long as you run it long enough to ensure you have flushed all the clear water out of the heat exchanger.

Then you don't really have to drain it. (just make sure the concentration of AF is adequate for your lowest expected temp)

There is an 18 point "procedure posted in the "Sticky" message above that mentions the other things you should do.

Why mess with the AF? You have one plug on the heat exchanger to pull, and you're done. Running the AF through muffs adds the potential to freeze if you don't do it right/enough/whatever.
Other things would be fogging the engine if you want, changing oil, removing outdrive, removing battery, stabil in the gas already done...

Sounds good. So far I have

Removed batteries for storage
Put some electrical grease on the connector ends to prevent rust
ran stable when i last filled up (2 runs ago)
drained the heat exchanger till it was empty (water bolt only)
greased 3 fittings on the stern drive
pulled the oil screw on the port side of the out drive to ensure there was only oil in there.

Oil was changed last season 3 runs ago so that looks good. I guess its good to go!

No no no no!!!!!! put down the antifreeze and step away from the engine. :D. Just remove the aft plug from the underside of the exchanger and you are done! No antifreeze, no NOTHING!!!!! your p/s cooler will drain back into the exchanger, check if you like.

After you have drained the heat exchanger, mop up any water remaining in the bilge to prevent freeze damage to the bilge pump.
Oh yeah....empty the Porta-Potty !!!

What about draining the exhaust elbow? Also, you need to pull the "radiator cap" and check the antifreezeto make sure it's sufficient whatever low temperatures you have in your locale.

The heat exchanger is no big deal, as you can always pull the end cap with one bolt and drain it 100%.

Any lower unit needs to be drained and filled at the end of every season. Just make sure the grease drained out is not "milky." An oil change is also warranted in most cases.

Re: How to winterize 470 IO 170hp

I have a 79 470 and winterize it every year here in upstate NY. I run rv/marine anti-freeze through it (anywhere's from 3 - 5 gals) till you get nothing but anti-freeze coming out, be sure. Then I drain the heat exchanger, riser, and voltage regulator and blow air through everything just to be sure. I've never had a boat motor freeze up and it cost very little to make sure it never happens to you, just a little time. I also do a few other things too like stabil in the fuel, fog the engine, remove the batteries and store the outdrive in the down position. I don't think you can be TOO careful when winterizing in cold climate.

IMHO complete waste of time, antifreeze and money.

The raw water drains out of the elbow when you drain the exchanger, same with the p/s cooler. Yes the antifreeze should be about 50/50. Why screw around with the end cap, isn't that what the DRAIN plug is for? Besides to completely drain the exchanger you would have to pull the AFT cap, way bigger PITA than removing the plug.

Every year since 1991 the ONLY thing I have done to freeze protect my 470 is check the antifreeze, and pull the raw water plug on the exchanger. Pull the transom plug and drain it right on the ramp when the boat is pulled for the winter.

I'm in complete agreement with Stonyloam !!

As we frequently use our V20 during the colder months (rock and Specks,) I have installed a long-handled drain **** in the aft end of the HE's shell I lieu of the plug.
