I am helping my sister-in-law with her motor ('89 Evinrude 40HP) and just came accross an interesting issue. Her lower unit is trashed and was taken off by a mobile-mechanic. He never got around to finishing the job and was fired, leaving the lower unit unfixed and disassembeld.

Since the lower unit (and therefore the water pump) are off, how do you run the motor for fogging and fuel stabilizing?

Thank you
Shaun

Hi Smig,
It won't hurt a thing to fire up the motor without the lower unit and run it for 30-40 seconds, which is plenty long enough to get a good fogging in. Keep an eye (and hand) on the exhaust cover and cylinder head, noting how warm it gets. When it gets to what you would describe as hot to the touch, shut it off.
If you want to make sure stabilized fuel gets into the carbs, you may have to run the motor a couple times to get stabilized fuel from the tank into the carbs, letting it warm up followed by however long it takes the motor to cool off again. Or, you can simply pull the front cover off the carbs and drain them when you're done. Either way should prevent them from gumming up.
- Scott
