Dream engine.....hmmmm

Diesel powered
Ceramics everywhere
Ceramic water pump impellor
Variable pitch prop with remote control so it can be adjusted on the move

And moving on from the engine: trailer brakes that actually work!

Brakes on trailers (in the UK anyway) are probably the one bit of technology that has never changed in the last century and still don't work.......

Often wondered why the tech used to create 120hp 2.0 litre lightweight turbodiesels (eg the new mondeo engine) hasn't made its way over to outboards yet...

A big block chevy with a supercharger. :p I'm looking for a hull that will hold just that...

Nos4r2,

I think it's Mariner that now do a diesel outboard: loads and loads of torque but there is a price premium!
And just think: no delicate electrics to get wet!

Congrats on finally getting the RIB: I finally found mine at the weekend and can't wait to get back out there (without my ideal engine tho ;-)

just a baby 25 Evinrude twin...but she is only 4m long and only for fishing/sightseeing.

It certainly isn't my dream engine..........

Surely in this day and age someone has developed a better way of cooling engines than with water driven by rubber against metal?

Imagine if the thinking power and R&D that has gone into computers had been committed to outboards?

Then again we'd need to press the start button to shut them down........(the old 'uns are the best!)

What does she go like with a 25 on her? I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie-got to get a 50 with PTT if at all possible. There's some nutters on ribnet running them with 60 and 65hp but I don't think thats a god idea from an insurance point of view.

Re: how would you build your dream engine??

I like zmoz's idea of a big block chevy and supercharger.....just think my RIB would sink with that on the back !

Nos4r2: haven't had the chance to play yet: awaiting parts for the engine: she was stored in a garage for nearly 30 years and is pristine (both engine and RIB!. An ebay special: £820 complete with trailer (again dry stored!). Boat and engine look like they have just come out of the showroom!

Used to be a coastguard and drove flooding hull avon searider 4m with the same engine and they used to be fine: certainly got us to where we needed to be quickly.

Read a lot on a boat design forum about problems with overpowering RIBs and some real horror story. Suspect you are right about the insurance too: there's a thread in here somewhere about that very topic.

Back on topic: how about a 150 VW TDi PD engine converted to outboard? Now that would be fun!
