Pretty much my thoughts-
The guy was much more of a Ahole than you for asking that of you---

I know the amount of caution used when meeting new people will vary depending on where you live, but what he asked is over the top

I have to agree with most of the posters here. You could very well have gotten into problems from twisting off bolts taking off the lower unit or water pump & have then been the bad *****. There is something about being helpful & another of being stupid.
