It is located at a dealer. The sales guy says they thoroughly inspect all boats before trade is allowed.

They often don't actually really do that. If they're smart, they'll at least make sure it doesn't have something major wrong with it like a cracked block, but they'll just rely on their 30 day warranty and your time to sort out any other issues.

ez - Are you saying a used boat salesman might not be telling the whole truth. :faint2: :D

But hopefully the OP is dealing with a reputable dealership.:thumb:

And the survey says................................

Its a rather large dealership, one of the largest I have seen in the Great lakes area.
As for the survey, tune in next monday/tuesday. Spoke with the surveyor today and expressed my (all your) concerns, and said he will go through it and will let me know the following day after the survey.

Seeing that it's being sold by a dealer..it most likely listed much higher than if it was a private sale. IMO a 30day warranty is useless....unless you are able to run the crap out of the boat in that 30 day period to make sure everything is fully functional/reliable.

$17000 for a 10 yr old boat is crazy IMO...but that's just my personal opinion.

Tons of well maintained(and newer model)used boats out there by private sellers. Since your smart and using a surveyor....a private sale may yield a much better(and newer) boat for less money.

I hope the $16,999 is your accepted offer - and not the dealers asking price?

Be sure to have an accepted offer done BEFORE you pay hundreds of dollars out of your pocket for a survey. If the survey finds any issues, you can use that to renegotiate price or fixes. If you get the survey done before you agree on a price, the dealer knows he has you by the balls when it comes time to negotiate. Or even worse, may sell it out from under you before you even get a chance to make an offer.

In reading through the thread it appears that this is the asking price and an offer has not been made. However, and to your point, it is interesting in either case . . . paying too much or getting a survey before the price is negotiated.

I supposed that if you did surveys before negotiating the price, you might be paying for a few surveys that go into the recycle bin. Probably end up getting a smaller boat due to fund depletion. :grumpy:
