How's this for Hurricane Damage

Hi all,

I am new here. Just wanted to share my Hurricane Juan story. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a couple of weeks ago we got hammered by a hurricane. Well....the next morning, we awoke, looked outside, and were relived to see that the tree that was uprooted behind our parked new bowrider, missed the boat completely...whew! Then, she said...."I don't see the motor" ....well, sure enough..I went down and it was gone. First I thought it might be in a tree somewhere, but quickly realized that it was stolen. The bolts were laying on the ground. They cut all the controls. They got in the boat and ripped the bench seat of it's hinges. All in all, close to $15K in damages. The best I can figure, is that they did it between 1 and 4 am, which was the height of the storm...of course there was no power, so it was completely dark. I am sure it was scoped and well planned out. Those motors weigh close to 400 lbs.
So...made it through without storm damage...but got robbed....is that some kind of whacky Murphy's law?

Wow Sorry to hear about that. But if you like your boat you sorta got lucky. I live in Washington state on the west coast of the US.
What usually happens here (on a nightly basis)
(they the crooks/thieves) just take the boat and trailer then turn onto a deserted road... it takes them about 3 minutes to cut all cables then chain saw a U around the motor and across the splash well.. and then between a month or two later your boat is found ruined and the motor long gone..
So in that point I'm hoping for u to look at the glass 1/2 full.. :) Yea its un-nerving that you and yours have been cased...They are just punks... BTDT..

Link

hello
sorry to hear of your loss glad ya made it through the breeze. we had a litle blow down here on the outer banks the other day. people were out looting and stealing during the hurricane after the people evacuated. I dont evacuate but I do check my weapons and stock up on ammo. its legal to shoot a thief after a state of emergency has been declared :) :) . should be legal all the time. good luck and keep posting

That sure sucks. They had to have scouted out your motor beforehand. Sure hope you get some satisfaction out of the situation.

Your home owners insurance should pay for it, tell them the motor was blown away or something. ;)

Kap.
I honestly feel bad about your experience. If it was a boat motor or a car. We tend to insure our cars quicker than our boats, because we are on the road everyday. I would agree with Ryan , try home owners insurance. good luck

Hi all,

Thanks for the nice words. I just bought the boat and motor new in June, so I had boat insurance. It is covered....all though with the deductible and some other costs, I am still out of pocket about $400-$500.

If I ever find out who!

I was up helping my brother take out his sailboat at Shearwater today (a stupid human trick in itself :> ). This marina is located on a naval base, so there's a gatehouse with guards taking your identification. Despite the security, the club's zodiac w/ 35hp mercury outboard was stolen. Apparently some guy managed to talk his way onto the base, saying he was looking for his boat he lost in the storm. I guess he found it...

Can you describe the outboard? Or is it not worth finding it now?

If you just bought the boat, I would snoop around the place/person you bought it from. I know it sounds sad, but stranger things have happened.
