I'm in the search for a new/used outboard for a 17 ft Calglass 1980? ( guess), but not sure of HP rating for the boat. I repainted the entire boat last year and didn't come across any plate on the boat with a Hp or weight seating capacity. Is there any place I can find this out??.<br />What should I be careful of when putting on a bigger motor. The transom strength is one, but how to test this?

Re: HP rating for Calglass Runabout

What style hull is this? (V, Deep V, walkthru)<br /><br />I would think (in general terms) something around 75-90 HP would be OK, but some boats in that size range can carry a lot more. I have a 16'6" Deep V runabout and it is rated for 95HP max.<br /><br />You definitely want to make sure your transom is solid before putting ANY motor on there.<br /><br />I hope someone can give you a more specific answer.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks , yah it's a deep V, had a 60 hp Johnson on it, 1985, want to make sure I'm not overworking the motor, if I but similar size hp, or the weight concern when I move up

The Calglass boats all had an impressed code on the starboard transom. This is the id the factory used for year, style, hardware etc. Not sure where you'd be able to get the meaning. I worked there so went by this code.
fun fur and artificial grass was all the rage in those days.
