I have 720 hours on my 05, 200 hp, HPDI and have always used ring free 1oz/10gal of fuel. Because of frequent problems with plug fouling and amount of trolling I do at 600 to 800 rpms, I decided to try Lucus fuel treatment. Wanted to see if it would improve the performace of my HPDI because Lucas fuel treatment has an excellent reputation, contains no solvents and is alcohol free. My experience is based on burning about 140 gallons of fuel. I followed the Lucas recommended 3oz/10gal fuel ratio after consulting with the company

My HPDI ran quieter and had noticibly less smoke running with Lucas. However, I noticed that running at 4000 rpms, my speed had dropped from 30mph to 25 to 27mph. In addition, after trolling for 5 to 6 hours, my engine sounded like it had loaded up. When returning home, It would take a minute or so to clear before it would take off. It was sluggish. Had not seen this prevously even after trolling for many hours. I went back to ring free to see if it would make any difference. It did, the speed returned to what I had seen before and the motor didn't load up. Experience with both products occured under simular conditions. I wasn't able compare the fuel useage since I don't have a fuel management system. Any improvement was not noticable.

My experience(not scientific study) has taught me that my HPDI runs better with ring free. Don't know if the sluggishness that I experience with Lucas was because of the additional oils in it and or it doens't prevent carbon buildup as well as ring free. Could be the 3oz/10g ratio is too high. Either way, I am back to using ring free. Woody
