OK guys, I have narrowed my search and have 2 weeks to make up my mind on which boat to buy. Same boat, one a 2000, the other an 01, all the same electronics. Dif. is engines, 2000 Yamaha 200 SW-II OX66s or 2001 200 HPDIs ? Even the engine hours are very close, 317 vs 350. So, which is better and why, never had a yamaha.

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

Both are great motors. The EFI (OX-66) will drink more gas below 3/4 throttle, but above that they'll be close to a match. I suppose a lot of your decision may center on whether or not you may want to use it on lakes restricted to 4-strokes and DFI 2-strokes (HPDI). Carbed and EFI 2-strokes are prohibited from an ever-growing number of bodies of water. If you intend to troll, then the HPDIs may serve you better.

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

my advice is to stay away from HPDI unless your area lakes require it. if you intend to do much trolling in the 1200-1700 range with HPDI bring extra spark plugs. my biggest concern is the maint. by 300+ hours should have had at least the 100 hour and the 200 hour sometimes the maint can be a killer on both if not done correctly. the pressure control valve on the HPDI is rather difficult to access so it never gets done till it fails.
my advice is to have the engine surveyed by a competent yamaha tech that is not involved in the sale that has instructions if he can find any flaws he gets a cash bonus.

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

Thanks guys. I am in the Atlantic, I want it for offshore fishing, I run 40 - 60 miles out, trolling and bottom fishing. Assuming all sched. maint. has been done, good oil & fuel used, is there a reason to choose one over the other. The HPDIs are better on gas, but will they last as long as the OX-66s? I don't want to buy something that has to go to the shop every week for tuning & tweaking because it is so sensitive.

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

neither will require to be in the shop every week for maintenance. both require their maintenance schedules to be followed closely. at this point the ox66 is probably the more solid engine. my expierience is if the hpdi was run in correctly it will perform faultlessly. there was a coil/plug update for hpdi? engines that were used for trolling a lot. if there is room on the transom fit a t9.9 high thrust kicker to use for trolling instead of the v6's. you get a decent trolling speed and use 1/10th the gas.
lastly take both engine model/serial numbers to a dealer and get a warranty search.

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

Thanks guys, I am sea trialing the HPDI boat tomorrow, if that goes well I have a 5* Yamaha Mech. doing a survey on both engines. Rodbolt, what should the mech. be able to tell me on 01 200's diagnostic wise?

Re: HPDI vs. OX66

only what aint broke
we have had tremendous corrosion issue with main harnesses, pulser coils and plug fouling.
look at the coil connections, if they are black not gray the ECM may need the update to correct this. look at the service intravels that have been done. the O2 sensors usually wont make 100 hours without cleaning. without knowing what tech has been working on it I cant help much. seems trolling in the 1000-1600 RPM range makes the plug fouling problem worse. ask to see the last time the medium pressure inline filter was changed.
ask when the last time the VST filter was serviced. ask how long ago were the low pressure pumps replaced. ask if the pressure valve grommet,t-stats and water pump have had the required 200 hour OR yearly maint done.mind the 200 OR yearly feature
OR is the key.

Thanks Rodbolt, the sea trial was great, and the mech. is going to do the engines later today. Will ask him to check those items too.

Thanks for the input guys, everything checked out and I am picking her up Sat., still can't believe the fuel econ. on the HPDI's compared to the old carbed 200's, almost 3 times the range!
