After having my boat serviced I decided to take her out for a spin in the bay. It was early april and where I live the water is cold all the time but really bad at the end of winter. I pushed her off the trailer and handed the end of the rope to my friend, then went to park the trailer. When I started back to the dock I noticed that the boat was now about 30 yards off the dock on an outgoing tide and my friend was holding on to the rope which was NOT attached to the boat. I ran down to the dock and decided to dive in and swim out to the boat which was about 50 yds away by now. I am a strong swimmer and swim a mile 3 days a week in a nice warm pool at the YMCA. Well, what happens is all of a sudden you can't breathe very well. Then you start to lose the strength in your arms and legs and no matter how hard you try you can't seem to get any strength in your stroke. I was beginning to think about how deep the water was when I gave it one more big try and made the last 15 yards to the boat. I climbed up on the cavitation plate and the amazing thing was that as soon as I got out I was fine, wasn't even cold. Might not try that again.:'(

Re: Hpothermia

There was a guy here this summer that did the same thing jumping in after a boat. He didn't have a problem with the cold but died of a heart attack trying to reach the boat that had floated out into the lake. The wind was pushing it at about the same speed he was able to swim.

Jumping into the water after a loose boat isn't a good trick to try.

Re: Hpothermia

had a woman die, she swam to rescue her son who fell out of a canoe with her husband and broather, she rescued the boy while a boater rescue the hubby, and other boy, she handed him off before she she caved in to hyperthermia, no life jackets. they were retrieving a fishing jig, thirty feet off shore.
Dad should of been charged, but I guess he has two jailers at home anyway.
