hub/bearing temperature

I recently replaced both the bearings and races on my trailer. I did a quick road check to see if everything was alright, and noticed that both hubs feels warmer than they should be. Not scorching hot, but much hotter than they were before. I used a hand held temperature gun to check the temperature. One side was 110f and the hotter side was about 120F. Today the air temp was over 90. The tires were much cooler.

Is this too hot? What could I have done wrong?

Thanks for your help.

That is about right... Air temp is over 90, what do you think the temp of the air is 1 foot above the pavement/blacktop. Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 110F.

as long as you didnt over tighten the spindle nut dont worry i always tighten it up with the dust cap off and the tire on and tighten up nut till i have about 1/8 inch play up and down holding the tire at the 12 and 6 oclock and wiggle it.ive heard up to 1/4 inch is fine hope this helps

smokingcrater I think is right on, my hubs probably run 10-20 deg above air temp but probably about equals road temp.
A thermal gun does not always give accurate temperature. You have to take into account your surface, your surrounding temps, and such. You can get reflected heat off the road and actually read a higher temp on your hub that the actual hub temp.
Also bare metal is not good. Painted is ok or wrap some electrical tape around.
You can get a 35 deg reading off a chrome bumper in the summer, it is the cold reflecting from space. I am no expert but I do have a level 1 certificate for thermal camera's. heat guns work on the same principal.

if you can hold on to it for a while it is not too hot--if you have to let go in a couple seconds you have a problem.
