Re: Hull damage

erikems,

I don't think that is a keel guard fix. It looks like there is rotted wood (the brown stuff). I would poke around with a screw driver and see what is really going on. Then take my grinder out and find my way to some clean dry glass and wood, and then re-evaluate the repair. Do you have access to the keel from the top side?

It also looks like there is an old patch, is this new damage?

Just my $.02

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Hull damage

I would grind this out and lay up some new material. It may look worse than it is or it may be worse than it looks. Either way Keel Shield or Guard are made to fix superficial wear, this appears to be structural. I would definatley put one on after the repair to prevent a repeat occurance. Make sure everything cures COMPLETLY (weeks, depending on conditions) or the Keel shield will not adhere properly.

Re: Hull damage

Definitely not! That has been patched in the past and it has come back to haunt! That needs to be ground out and fixed properly. If you absolutely cannot get to it from the inside, then at the very least, you need to grind it out clean and fill with epoxy. Do it right, that is a pretty serious gash. The keel gaurd is preventative measure, not a repair mechanism.

Re: Hull damage

Thank you all! I have never done anything like this before, so please bear with me.

Do I just use a regular electric hand grinder I get at Home Depot? What type of disk do I use?

So after I grind it down, what do I use to repair it?

I can not get to it from the top.

Eric

Re: Hull damage

If that were my boat, I'd make sure I could access that damaged area from the inside. Even it it means cutting a hole in the floor. As a minimum, you're going to need to inspect your stringers for moisture rot anyways.

Good luck.

That gash goes further down than what you have ground so far. I'm sure that was a pretty good gash when it happened. The glass looks cracked underneath, and I'm guessing there has been some water intrusion. I think it would be a good idea to check the stringers, if they have rot, you can have some serious structural damage. You need to check this out, open the floor somehow and get a good look underneath, poke the stringers with something to see if there is any softness or moisture that weeps out. This will allow you to do the proper repair on the hull.

Re: Hull damage

What we are all trying to tell you is that based on our collective experience you should be very concerned for the structural integrity of this boat. The grinder work you did is probably the tip of the iceberg. Take a picture further away, there is no perspective from the close up.

This damage is not from scuffing the sand at the beach. Most likey came from hitting some rocks or drift wood while moving pretty fast. It's what you can't see that is concerning. Do a bunch of searches and read through old threads, stringers are the "frame" of your boat, the skeleton if you will. The dark spots suggest this boat has some broken bones deep within.

The keel guards are handy but they can't provide structural repairs. If you go for it, then you'd better have your PFD's at the ready and stick close to land. Otherwise, read up and repair it correctly. It's not a complete loss, there were worse train wrecks on this site that now are better than new.

Don't bum, just fix it. That's the beauty of boats, you can fix them. You'd feel better knowing it was done right. Next time out on a boat feel how it gets banged around. You don't want the doubt of "will hold together". I've got half my freakin boat ripped apart right now for a "soft spot" in the deck. Damn I'm glad I had the sense to fix it. My family goes out on this boat, nuff said!

Eric,
Get "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" for guidance and jump right into it. It will take time, cause angst and you'll ask yourself "what the @#$%!! am I doing this for" while you're grinding away at the glass. Use the biggest, meanest brute of a variabe speed grinder that you can fit in there with the coursest grit you can hold onto safely (20-36 grit), wear a resparator (full face positive air folw is best)and a typar/tyvec suit and leave no skin exposed. When the the brute grinding is done jump up to an 80-100 grit to smooth out the canyons you'll make then lay it up.. Don't let the job scare you, yes it could get big but after a little poking around you may find that it will not be that bad.. Is there any way to pop the top off the hull? If you can take off the molded deck you can see and work from the inside. It might sound like more work but depending on what you fine it may be the fastest way to do the job right. Good luck and remember this is why we love boats.....

Re: Hull damage

So I'm trying to cut this hole in the floor and man is it hard and smokes a lot. I've tried 3 different types of blades, but it's a very slow proccess. Any suggestions on blades?
