Hey guys I just recently purchased a 69 glastron v-163 that needed some work. My question is it sat in salt water for about 6 months the guy told me and it has som barnies on it and was curious if they would eat through the bottom of the boat and affect the hull? if so what would be the best way to tell how bad it is and what would be the best way to fix? This is my first fixer upper so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mark

Re: hull integrity

Mark - Long time ago I had a 19' Glasron tri hull. Ran that sucker in salt water for 15 years.

Anyway to the barnicle problem. Barnicles attach themselves to the gelcoat or paint of the hull (or anything else they come in contact with). They do not eat through anything but attach themselves so you have no worry. They can be a screaming bit@h to get off after they have dired as you probably have seen. If they are still wet they can be scraped off quite easily.

If rock hard I would suggest using a scraper or putty knife. You can also try an acid wash - don't remember what kind. If still soft, a pressure cleaner (rented high pressure type) might work.

Also try the search engine of this web site and Google for other ideas - I would start with an arguement like "barnacle removal".
