Re: hull paint

John,

Check out Interlux's and Awlgrip's websites. Both sites are very informative and give some examples of the finished product. Pettit and Epifanes are some others you can look at. Just depends on what you looking for. The best paint money can buy, or the best paint for the money? Ease of application, durability, life expectancy...all come into play. I am going to be painting my boat as soon as I can get a couple of warmer days (and some motivation). I'm going with Interlux Perfection which is a two part poly paint. They have several videos on their website showing the application process and the end result. It's a little pricy @ $55.00 per qt, but I figure I can get a professional looking paint job for under $500.00

Re: hull paint

I used the Interlux Brightside one-part polyurethane when I painted mine. They have a "Dark Blue" and a "Saphire Blue" that would probably be what you are looking for.
I am very happy with the results so far. It was easy to apply with a roller & covered well in 2 coats. After the end of the season I touched up the scratches from docks and was impressed that most were only in the top coat and didn't penetrate to the primer even.
(Good excuse for some photos! :D )
Kevin,
You did a beautiful job! What prep did you do before painting and how did you apply the paint?
Looks better than new!

Re: hull paint

Thanks, but I'm not Kevin. My name is Paul.
For painting.
I sanded the fiberglass with a random orbital sander. Then wiped down with a fiberglass cleaner. This roughed up the gelcoat and removed any wax.
Then 2 coats of Interlux primer & 2 coats of paint applied with Lintless rollers . Lightly sanding between coats.
I didn't bother "tiping" the finish with a brush but the paint self leveled pretty well on it's own. I was working in an old barn so there is some dust in the finish, but from 10 feet away you can't notice.
Here's what I started with.
Re: hull paint

bekosh...nice job on the boat. One suggestion for your next boat, always de-wax the hull before any sanding. Sanding can force pieces of wax or silicone into the surface and later possibly cause adheasion problems.

Re: hull paint

Paul,

I was hoping you would let me take credit of that very nice paint job of yours. I can't wait to get mine done. What was the total cost of your paint job? I know the Britesides is a bit cheaper than Perfection, although I did just find a place where I can get the Perfection for $42.95 per qt.

Re: hull paint

To everyone, Thank you for the nice comments.

Kevin, the Brightside was about $35 per qt. at the BoatUS store. I used about 3 qts each of primer and paint. ~$210 + brushes, rollers, cleaner, etc...

Dan, You are right. I just went back and looked at the Interlux guide. Clean first with Fiberglass solvent wash, THEN sand.

Best bet, don't listen to me. ;) Download the Boat Painting Guide from Interlux.

Re: hull paint

I bought interlux on Ebay (sorry - don't remember the seller's name off hand) and was very pleased with the result. The paint was a one-part product and it's held up very well. The finish was decent too, but I too am very impressed with the result Bekosh got rolling his paint out. I started with a gallon, but by the time it was properly thinned and I'd sprayed my 14" tri-hull I had nearly a gallon left.

I'm going to spray the current boat project and will only buy a quart for that job.

Good Luck.

Re: hull paint

Thanks, Kevin. $43/qt might be a little cheaper than my local marina.
