I just purchased this Tahoe Q4 FS. It's a 2006 so obviously it has a few issues. While crawling around I found what is shown in the pictures. How would I go about fixing the large area of missing gelcoat near the trailer bunk? It wraps around from the rear to underneath.

I anticipate fixing the crack in the rear area by utilizing the West get coat repair system. I was first going to dremel out the crack area, then mix the gel coat to fill it back in. Does this sound about right? I also have some minor spiderweb cracks in random areas that I plan to repair in the same way.

I think you have some real bad problems coming on. From what I can see it appears the gelcoat was not bonded correctly to the glass. Like when someone paints over an unprepared and primed surface, the paint just peels off. Thinking its a matter of time before the really big chunks start falling off.

Suggest start chipping away at it until you get to a spot the will not chip off, then sand and prep surface for new gel

Yep ^^^ I agree,

Proably a slight defect from Tahoe that left a small area of gelcoat unbonded to glass creating a bubble of sorts.

Someone probably backed into something while in the water or on the trailer and instead of a smallcrack or simply fraxturing the gelcoat. The void behind the gelcoat allowed the damaged oiece to fall out.

Need to grind it back to good bonded gelcoat, feather the edges, fill in w CSM or 1708 (for bulk) until the area is roughly rebuilt. Skim w polyester putty (called PB [peanut butter]) here and lastly apply gelcoat.

Once the gelcoat repair is finished, sand smooth, and tapered into original gelcoat.

Even if you find the exact white gelcoat used originally used by Tahoe, the repair isnt going to be invisible. The 11yr old gel has faded. The new repair gel will fade at a different rate. Even color matching existing color is occasionally challenging for someone who color matches gelcoat regularly as a professional....

Good luck w your project

Thanks for the advice guys. The large spot is from hitting a log at the end of last season. I never saw that until earlier today. It knocked off my transducer and also bent my prop. The other crack came from... who knows what.

I bought this boat from a family friend that was going through hard times for next to nothing. It has a newly rebuilt 4.3 and the rest is in pretty good shape. These are the only real issues that I've noticed.

It doesn't appear that the glass substructure has been compromised. It's just a Gelcoat repair. Grind and feather then use Thickened gelcoat (Cabosil mixed with Gelcoat to effect the repair. Make sure ALL loose gelcoat has been removed. The crack could probably just be opened up using a v-bit in a drill or dremel and then filled with the same Gelcoat paste. Make sure all repair areas are cleaned well with Acetone prior to applying new gelcoat.
