Apparently some folks are not adept at engaging parking brakes or putting their rigs in 1st gear while unloading the boat.

You always want your car in P/1st gear and e-brake on while on an incline. It requires two points of failure as opposed to one.

I would say that 95% of the people who drive automatics never use the parking break ever. When I drove an automatic, I would almost always use it, i got in the habbit of using it all the time, just cuz i heard that will help your transmission last longer. And what is the harm in using it.

I have had people ask me, "why do you use the parking brake?"
So that doesn't happen.
You really need it on the boat ramp.

I grew up in new orleans no change in elevation for quite some ways. The parking brake was only used in extreme emergencies, reserved for occasional use.

That worked fine until I went to Seattle, nobody told me about the hills there. My standard jeep cheroke rolled through a parking lot and ended up hanging off an embankment. Lots of laughs and a $600 towing bill (it took 2 trucks), now I am in TX but still check the brake twice and make sure the car is in gear.

I would guess that people who have vehicles where the parking brake is set my hand (i.e. pulling up a handle on the console) are more likely to use their parking brake then people with vehicles where the brake is a pedal on the floor.

Just a hunch, but I always set the brake on my truck which is a hand brake and never set it on the car which is a foot brake...

Re: Human submerges truck whilst landing boat...again

This exact thing happened to my neighbors uncle. He drowned at the landing in his truck a few years back. It also happened to a friend of mine in the first 20 miles of owning his truck. Literally picked up the truck new from the dealer, went home got his boat and brought it to the landing. He was unfamiliar with the vehicle and did not put it in park when he exited to launch. The truck was totaled with 20 miles on the odometer. He got more money from the insurance company than he paid for the vehicle. Finally, this happened to me years ago with a 5 speed/stick on the street. I walked away, the car poped out of reverse (the gear I used for parking) and the car was slowly rolling down a slight incline and I actually made it in the car and stopped it just shy of trouble. That said, all my cables are rusted and unusable in my current vehicles due to lack of use.

using the parking brake also adjust the rear brakes. , otherwise they will not be in adjustment, and the front pad will do all the braking and wear prematurely.
do as I say not as i do though,

Drum brakes are adjusted by a little finger on the star adjuster. This finger moves across the adjuster every time the brakes are applied while the vehicle is moving in reverse, atleast that's my understanding.

If you have self adjusting brakes that is. I remember the good old days with the square drive wrench adjusting the drums every month or so.

Always worried that it would happen to me. After I got my boat decided to not chance it and had my emergency brake fixed. The back brakes worked fine, but for my suburban, has an inner back brake specifically for the emergency brake.

DUH!!!! He was testing the bouyancy device in the bed of the truck:eek:
It's a shame that the passenger compartment airbags didn't deploy...to help with the front of the truck.:D:D
The pic that really gets me is the trailer on the bottom of the lake. It doesn't look like it's even attached. Maybe the truck will settle on top of the trailer for retreival?

LOL. Exactly what I was thinking. He called the tow company, and took off in the boat to get some lake time in. Probably told the tow truck to call him when they were 15 minutes away. :)

It's a shame too, looks like it WAS a nice truck.

I don't know how many times someone asks if their moped can tow their naval destroyer. When a vehicle fit for towing has a accident like this, it is humbling.
