I found this on eBay and I was wondering which one is a better value for the $?
the 595c $340 is a re manufactured and the 383c $350 is new.
320V x 240H 5" brilliant color TFT display VS
320V x 240H high resolution 3.5" TFT display
1-is the dual-beam (200KHz & 83KHz) transducer 20? or 60? beams better than the single 20? beam?
2-Are this units any good? I am leaning toward the 595c for the larger screen!!
thanks in advance for your opinion

im in the same boat. im trying to find a upgrade to my 3d humminbird. im looking into gps/finder combos. I can tell you that humminbird puts outt a good finder. The dual beams are better ,imo, than single. You need to look into a finder with higher resolution. the higher the better . Then dual beam will always outperform single beam. Ever heard the old saying,"2 is better thhan 1". SINCE BOTH ARE OF SIMILAIR PRICE I WOULD GET THE 595C.

I JUSt went through this two weeks ago. The 383C has a pretty tiny screen. (If in doubt, download a picture of it and blow it up so you get 3.5" diaginal.) The 595C has more power, duel beam (standard) and a bigger screen. Downside is that screen resolution (on both) is pretty poor.
p.s. If you buy from ebay, make sure you get the GPS reciever and transducer included. Some leave them out.
FWIW, after some searching, I found a smoking 40%+ off deal on the Huminbird 767 ( w duel beam & GPS module) @ Cabela's. It's monochrome/B&W but has over twice the resolution as the others ( enough to reportedly track a 2" jig!). It's also based on the upper end 700 series so carries that technology and extra features. It normally sells for $500 they still have them for $299 (new in box) with free shipping. That's cheaper than the refurbed 595c. I'm waiting to install mine now.

I think you will find that most will agree a 320 x 240 display will show you everything you need to see. The higher resolutions may look better but you are not seeing anymore data than is shown on the lower resolution unit.

You have black and white TVs? :D

You need to have a unit that supports the dual beam function.

I personally thing the dual beam thing is a big marketing ploy. Funny how the high end units don't use dual beam to produce great details. In fact I have to detune my unit when running in 200kHZ mode so I don't clutter up my screen with the tiny little comb jelly fish that swarm the Bay in the spring.

You can always tell when someone on the local fishing board upgraded their head unit and transducer. The first thing they ask is what are all those tiny little blue spots I see on the screen. A lot of "good" units using mediocre trasnducers don't pick them up.

What kind of fishing do you do and what are the depth ranges of your primary fishing grounds?

I have a 757C with FF/GPS/Chartplotter. Paid about $260 from Amazon about 6 mos ago. Came with transducer. Nice unit, bright screen, good maps. You can include chartplotter for about the same as wo so why not? :)

OK, I take that as no fishing, just for navigational depth. Dual-beam vs single beam will not make a difference for your use. Focus on other differences, like screen size. 40+ year old eyes, appreciate a larger sceen, even if the pixel resolution is the same. ;)

BTW, you can go to the Humminbird website and download the owners manuals for any of these units. That's how I did my comparison anyway.
Happy fishing!

I ordered the 383c months ago and had fears that the screen would be way too small. Seriously, I am VERY HAPPY with what I got and what I paid. You don't need big screens when you have color. Whatever you buy, wire it away from the tach, preferably on a seperate loop than your console wires all together. The difference is huge.

Are you over 40? I am and I have to wear reading glass.
(The difference is huge) why a separate loop? you mean from the battery?

I'm 34 and have horrible eyesight. I say seperate form the tach or directly from battery due to the distortion caused by the rpm's. You won't notice the problem till you hit a certain RPM range. The 383c is designed so that it is unlikely that you could ever outrun the sonar. I wired mine the first time to the main wire harness that comes from the battery and motor and it worked fine at low rpm/speed. Kept moving the transducer angle to no avail. Finally followed the wiring instructions  and it works alot better. It has zoom and all that too. For an entry level combo unit it is really nice. The GPS is worth it alone to me.

I had a Humminbird 580 w/gps, and I would suggest that you go for the larger screen. If you end up running a split screen (gps and sonar at the same time) it might be difficult to see it on a 383c *I'm not sure if the 383c can run a split screen. The resolution is a benefit and makes things look sharp on the screen, I did like the higher resolution and would recommend it. The dual beam is a real good thing to have in shallower water where you would need to sweep as much to the side as possible. In deep water ie.Lake Michigan, I had problems with the wide beam not reading correctly due to large waves but the narrow beam always read correctly. So if you fish both shallow and deep I would go for one with dual beam.

I am not a bay fisherman, but would guess that you would look for schools of suspended fish or baitfish, such that the wider beam (60) would have some value. Many times I am more interested in finding structure, so the narrow beam is fine.

Color helps allot, espicially on gps screens, but would still say bigger is better. Recommend going to a local retailer, to try to see the actual screens in demo mode.

If you are not in a hurry, I think the prices will continue to drop on all the available close-out models, as more and more retailers get the new models in. Take your time and shop around for the next month or two.

True, Split screen leaves something to be desired. However, Full svreen GPS still has audio alarms for fish.
