Having a heck of a time connecting handheld Garmin GPS60 to Matrix 17. It is never detected.

Am using the 4 wire Humminbird generic GPS cable, with it's red, black, green and white wires. (white not used or needed, red optionally powers GPS option, and not needed if GPS is self powered).

For the Garmin, using the Garmin 4 pin to PC serial DB9 connector.

Traced the pins coming out of the Garmin to the Serial DB9. Only need to use data out and ground.

For Humminbird, only need to use Green data in and ground.

No matter what I try, does not work.
GPS is set for NEMA out, uses 0183 and 3.01.
When connected to laptop, any software that requires NEMA 0183 works 100%. This confirms GPS is setup correctly, and cable works. I actually had to get this serial cable because the GPS included a USB cable that did not support NEMA. The serial connection does.

If I connect Humminbird cable to laptop with wires correct, I have no problem using Humminbird PC program to send and receive settings from Humminbird, and can flash Humminbird as well. This confirms Humminbird cable is also correct, and my wiring skills are adequate. (plus consumer electronics is what I do, so this type of thing is as simple as it gets).

Exchanged Humminbird for another, and exact same results. Not detected.

Humminbird to generic GPS cable cost $20.
Humminbird to Garmin specific cable costs $50.
With only two wires needed, and as an electronics tech, see which way I went?
I can't see how the $50 cable would be the answer.
Any ideas or tips?
