The water's are still rising :( The damage reports are not good....... Killington base lodge collapsed....... roads closed due to severe problems.

Sorry to hear that Bob. I can sympathize... today I went to the lake and the dock was literally swept away... hundreds of miles of roadways were closed... and I still have intermittent power  and the rivers haven't even crested yet...

Re: Hurricane Irene --How's everyone doing?

Our city of 30,000 had very little damage from the tropical storm, a few trees down and very few lost power. Our lights never flickered, a tree across the street fell, no damage. Wife wanted to go along the ocean roads to see the roar of the ocean, waves only maxed out to 17 feet crashing along the rocks. Many of the locals came out too as cars were bumper to bumper going along the shore, people pulling over to the side of the road to take pictures.

Just checked the weather bouy and the highest winds were 31.7 gusting to 45 mph., most damage was inland and those living along fresh water rivers had extreme flooding. Here on Cape Ann we do not flood. I can not understand how people can buy houses in a flood plain today, only asking for trouble.

I hear ya on the flood plain, though in fairness, a lot of these folks may not have known they were in a flood plain.

In 1993, we had what they then called the 100 year flood. The Des Moines and Skunk rivers in central Iowa and the Cedar and Iowa in east central reached record crests. Many people who never dreamed they were in the flood plain got flooded. Unfortunately the general attitude was "Well, this is as bad as it will ever get," and very little was done to prepare for suture flooding. In 2008, we found out what flooding was all about. People who had only a little water in their basements in 1993 had 8 or 9 feet of water in their first floors in 2008.

Now did we get a 500 year flood 15 years after the 100 year flood? Or was the whole flood plain designation wrong to begin with? Still working on that.

It was pretty much a dud here on the mid-Chesapeake area. We had 60-70 MPH winds overnight, but the winds and tide cooperated, barely had any water on the yard.

A 500 year flood is a magnitude that is likely to occur only once every 500 years. A 100 year flood is likely to occur once every 100 years. A 200 year flood could come next year ;)

Doing great here in Kansas. Saw the weather on the boob tube, but decided that pawn stars was more exciting. I did see that TV anchor covered in raw sewage though, that was a hoot. Oh, we got about 1/8 inch of rain today, but the ground is still dry. Weather permitting, we may go out in the boat this weekend as its getting late in the season. Still having fun though.

A few shots withing 3 miles of me :(

EVERY town has damage. People are trapped in Killington....... supplies are being brought in by 4 wheeler over the mountain trails....... the Outter creek down the road from me went from 4' to 17' deep in less than 6 hours.

These are pictures of 4 lane main roads........

Re: Hurricane Irene --How's everyone doing?

Upstate NY took a really beating with Schoharie, Albany, & Washington Counties suffering damages in the millions. The last I checked the NYS Thruway was partially closed. Also, the NYS Canal System suffered millions in damages with 3 locks totally under water, heavy damage to some dams, etc., etc. The canal is closed from lock 19 all the way to Waterfford until further notice, as is the Champlain Canal. From the pics that I've seen, it don't look good for a reopening this season as far as the Erie section is concerned. It will be a massive undertaking to get this section up & running again. That's going to cause a real problem for boaters who will be heading south this fall. It's a damn shame.

Re: Hurricane Irene --How's everyone doing?

Well the true horror is starting to appear as the water levels drop. Aside from the caskets and previously embalmed bodies tied up in the debris ........... there are hundreds of head of livestock.....cows and horses. It looks like a war zone in places :(
