coastal flooding here in Norfolk VA and expecting more high tides, and high but manageable winds, lots of rain. Boats will do OK but piers, yards and low houses, maybe not.

My yard is flooded; yesterday at low tide it was higher than normal high. I just had fill dumped down there to try to raise low spots and it will all be sucked out to sea. I put up a silt curtain but we'll see. Put the last boat on a trailer yesterday.

Big tides hitting the coastal of the Eastern Shore where a group of us have a hunt club on an ocean barrier island; next tide will be 8.5 feet above and I suspect the ocean waves will be in the 6-8' height at least. Not pretty.

Good luck to everyone and stay safe!

looks like Sandy has claimed a historic ship .... from a bygone era .... the good news is it appears the Coast Guard is going to be able to bring the crew home

Ocean City, Maryland

"Ocean City
's downtown pier has been destroyed overnight, town officials confirmed, as Hurricane Sandy pounds the shores with massive surf.

Town police spokesman Michael Levy said there is extensive damage to the pier, though webcams show some of the structure still standing. Town officials will provide more details at a 10 a.m. press conference."

Here's the last webcam pic I could find. I think the webcam's now gone.

Re: hurricane sandy

As much as this storm will be a curse to many, it'll also be a blessing for some others... mainly dumping a large amount of rainfall and runoff into the great lakes to raise the dwindling levels.

I saw where flood warnings were raised as far west and inland as Chicago.

It'll also mean construction jobs for repairing storm damage.

... but there's also going to be many more people that'll be miserable because of the conditions this storm will create.

The flooding in Chicago will come from the winds racing southbound on Lake Michigan, 20' ers expected.

They only managed to rescue 14 of the 16 crew so far. There were 16 of them in the lifeboats, but somehow two got lost in the rescue. I was actually on board that ship when it visitied Halifax. It was originally built about an hour away from where I live.

Well Dang.

Lost the near and far ends of my pier in Nanticoke, MD. The water pipes and electrical are ripped out too.

The 2 boats on their lifts are still hanging on for the time being. I don't have much hope for the little boat on the 2-piling lift that used to be attached to the rest of the pier.

I am curious jdlough with all the advance warning why did you not pull the boats out of the water?

Mainly, because I'm a nitwit.

Also, the truck's in the shop and they only forcast 10% chance of a 2 foot surge, which my pier could handle. The boats are strapped quite snugly to the lifts.

This is the worst I've seen in 10 years here.

During Irene, I pulled the boats, but the lift would have been safer for them. Lots of my neighbors' boats got damaged in their yards from fallen trees.

It would have been better if I lost both boats and the pier remained intact. The pier and lifts cost 5 times as much as both boats combined.

Is this hurricane really going to produce enough direct rainfall to have a great effect on the lakes? I figured that the lakes were fed primarily from snow.

I go through the same drill here. My boat is better off in the water in a northeaster even with a 7' tide b/c of the location of the house and side I tie the boat to. I let out all the line and let it blow. But a hurricane gives me wind from all points so the loose boat would have been banging through the pier when we went west--and that was our worse wind.

When they are coming, the whole question is the wind direction with the greatest fetch* towards your location. Your photos show you are getting the straight hit with a long fetch--the worst combo. And of course you can't predict it; I have seen two similar hurricanes on my river, with the worst winds only about 30 degrees different, have completely different effects of what is hurt and what is not touched.

Been doing this over 50 years living on the water. They're all different and you never know what's the best thing to do, and when you do know, it's too late!

However, it looks like you need a better forecaster. Newscasters who use the phrase "storm surge" seldom know what they are talking about. Adjusted tide charts from NOAA is what you want.

*fetch= uninterrupted wind path

Re: hurricane sandy

As it turns out, the lifts were the right place for my boats. A couple of large branches went down right where I would have parked my trailers.

With the forecasters crying "Wolf" for so many years, I guess I let my guard down a bit.

It was the NOAA Storm Surge Probabilities map that predicted 10% chance of >2 foot surge.
Of course, now that they have a truer idea of the storm, they revised their prediction to a 30-40% chance of >2 foot surge for the rest of the week for my area.

They are actually ...
[h=1]Meteorologist[/h]Try to determine a hurricane's path alone will be anyones best guess.

The 'Cry Wolf" started after (IMO) when Hurricane Andrew struck Florida.

Andrew killed more people then any other hurricane to date.. and had more destruction than Anything on record because they did not Inform Enough people. Trust me I Was there.

After Andrew they got Very worried about Storm forecasts and the implications of Miss-Understating a Storm.

OverHype is better then "meh.. it's a cat 1 or 2". Its all about location.

Lemme put it to you this way..You see a Hurricane your way .. get AWAY !! I dont care if its a Cat 1.

YD.

PS. They call them Hurricanes for a reason .. its not "Very strong tropical storm" .. its a Hurricane..

..

Andrew isn't even in the top 30 deadliest hurricanes:

Deadliest U.S. Hurricanes of All Time | Weather Underground

People get killed in hurricanes nowadays because they don't take heed to the warnings and evacuation orders.

Had Sandy been a category 5 the death toll would've been catastrophic.
