Hurricane SD 187 I/O

I recently bought a 2011 SD 187 I/O. I upgraded to the stainless steel package and the 220 hp Mercruiser 4.3 MPI. I'm just looking for any fellow owners advice on maintenance and such. Any idea of what kind of performance I can expect with this boat/motor package. Incidentally I've been boating for 20 year (since I was a kid) and had never heard of Hurricane boats until I stumbled onto them on the web (looking at Rinker boats). It is the perfect package for my needs (family of 4 with younger kids). I'm upgrading from a '92 170 sunbird/115 Johnson combo. Thanks.

Nice to see a fellow Canuck up here with a Hurricane. Not surprising you haven't heard of them, they're not common here and I stumbled across my first one as well. Have since bought my second one.

If I was to guess that that boat will most likely be in the mid to high 40s at WOT. I'm an outboard guy so for I/O you should receive a maintenance manual that comes with the boat from the dealer. If not, ask for it as it'll be specific to your engine. Typical annual maintenance is gear oil in sterndrive, oil in the engine, check plugs, fuel filter, etc but again I'd follow the specifics for that engine that Mercury provides. (I received the specifics for my engine and intervals for maintenance) It'll also cover your break in period, etc.

Dealer said I should be above 50 WOT but we'll see. I'll be cursing most often so a nice ride is more important that WOT. I can't wait to get the new boat and try it out! I'm on the trent system and I'm expecting to field a lot of questions about this boat when traveling through the locks. They're great looking and appear ultra practical. We just need more dealers up here! My closest dealer is over any hour away.

Snorthey..... you may be right on the WOT as I read 190HP 4.3 not the 220HP MPI version. you should be around the 50ish range but as you mentioned, the ride is more important and rarely do you use WOT..... That boat will be fun at mid range in the 30s... You'll love it. Don't forget to post some pics.... My dealer is also a good hour away between Kingston and Smith Falls.

I have a 2008 FDGS 202 4.3L 190 HP and at WOT I'm at 48, 50 on a real smooth day so you shouldn't have any problem hitting 50+. But I agree with everyone else, ride is more important than WOT. I usually get up to a best riding speed and one that's economical. With the price of fuel I think about it before pushing that throttle too far forward.

So far so good with the new boat! I love it! The only thing I'm dealing with is the bilge. I was told by the dealer it's was a simple on/off bilge but mines not working that way. There hasn't been much water in the boat but so far the only way it runs is if I cover what appears to be an optical eye on the box next to the bilge. I thought it might be a water depth sensor?

Regarding performance of the boat, I'm still breaking it in but I did open it up and the Speedo read 55 mph. Not bad. I didn't hold it long though I'm just at the 10 hour mark.
