Some major companies tell me going from aluminium to stainless in same size & pitch will drop rpm some, others say it will not. I'm running a aluminium 13&1/4 by 17 pitch turning 5900 rpm. Tried a 13by 19 turning 5800. Tach is right & verified by mechanics tach. What stainless pitch will drop her to 5500 max??? Thanks

i know you are looking for hwsiii here but i am also looking at going from alum to ss right now.
i do know that last year my buddy has a boat that has a 19p ss prop and we tried my 17p alum prop and he actually lost a few hundred rpm. i am finding out there is so much more to the tuning and performance of these props. good luck.

Re: Hwsiii :Going from aluminium to stainless

Les, theoretically you could have a 17" and a 19" pitch aluminum prop turn almost the same RPM, but there would have to be major blade geometry differences. In my opinion in most cases this would not be true. I would like to see pictures of the two props, but I believe that both props are probably closer in pitch than is posted on the props or there are other problems motor or tach that are creating this. I cannot make an informed decision when the very mathematics I depend on to get close are not in agreement with what is theoretically happening already. In theory there should be a difference of about 650 RPM between a 17" and a 19" pitch in the same make and model of prop. And if these props are showing right at the same speed at theses RPM it only reinforces the theory that they are almost the same pitch, at least theoretically or their is another problem.
BUT if you want to go ahead and buy a new SS prop anyway I would try a 19" pitch.

Re: Hwsiii :Going from aluminium to stainless

If I get all numbers off of both props will this help??? Oh & thanks for trying to help I really appreciate it. It's just that I am not getting very much needed info from several of the major manufacturers including Michigan Wheel. I just want to get her right. I'd like to see it turn 5500. It definitley doesn't sound too tight at this rpm & every other boat I've had seemed to last like this too. I've had way bigger boats than this one & never had trouble finding prop info for them.
