Its a tool that allows for a higher mounting (X dimension) of the engine. The higher X dimension means less drag and improved overall efficiency. Improved holeshot and better top end as well as a better cruise attitude are common benifits. On some boats it will help stabalize the ride. The motor should be mounted high enough that the fin is not under the surface when running.
