Anyone have Pros or Cons on Hydrafoils? I have a 77 Johnson on a 77 Crestilner stinger and im looking to make steering performance a little better than what i have.

I was talking to a buddy of mine and he brought up a Hydrafoil might help.

I would like to hear opinions on this.

Thank you,

What are you trying to improve? The foil probably won't help steering and can cause other problems.
I've had good luck with foils on a 50hp outboard and a 120 hp I/O
improving planing staying on plane at reduced power and stabilizing ride.but they can cause problems as well.strange handling, extra drag etc.
If I was going to do it again I would get trim tabs, probably smart tabs.

I've used them on boats in the past and have always removed them. What steering issue to you have. It may be just a matter of adjusting the torque tab.

The foil is a tool. Used correctly it will allow you to make other adjustments to gain efficiency. Used incorrectly it will most likely decrease efficiency. It may or may not affect steering torque. However, steering torque can be delt with by other adjustments.

the steering just seems tight (real tight), it also seems sluggish to make a quick turn. Granted its a V bottom and seems to pitch hard when i turn at half throttle or above, I was thinking that maybe a foil would offer better control or even smooth ness when turning.

i posted this earlier and then read some more in the forums on trim tabs.alot of great information here guys, i really appreciate your thoughts.

thanks again,

Unhook the steering, see if the motor turns by hand check if steering cable is stiff.Heeling is pretty much a product of hull design.Trimming in might help
power tabs I suppose would help.
