I want to get one so i can motor( even if slowly) in very shallow water. They come in various set back dimensions. I have read that the farther the set back the higher you can raise the motor and still run.

at what point do the negatives start to come into play???

is there a drawback to having too much setback?

I am not so concerned with top end performance..and I dont need the jack plate to play with my top end. I just need it to raise up for shallow water drive , then set her back down to a pre determined setting for normal use.

the tilt feature of motors just makes the motor drive the rear back down into the bottom!! thus my desire for a jack plate.

but is it usually a 5 " is good...then a 6" is better and then an 8" is even better and so on??

i realize that the farther back the motor hangs off the boat the more the rear will sink..

I am having flotation pods installed to hel aleviate that

thanks bob
