bought a 27' Excaliber ('81) with a 502 #14096859(?) and a TRS outdrive #5626542 last week from Baltimore area, brought it back to Louisville, had a friend look at it in the drive, hooked up the hose and started it for 2-4 minutes, tested throtle and Trans, all fine, took it to lake, off-loaded it from trailer in cove ran it about 3-4 minutes and back to dock. It started smoking slightly white colored smoke, looked at temp guage which was nearing 200*. shut it down and waited for it to cool. Tried to run it again and it doesn't start. Spark plugs, wires fine, Oil seems to be fine, does not appear to have water in engine. Starter turns over motor, buts it makes a audible "whump" sound and will not run. Any other ideas. I have not replaced thermostat yet or water impellor, but will next week. Also looking into "hydrolock" and read from L.I. Chuck on another hydro-debacle that he suggested putting Quick Silver in radiator after water flushed out (if that is the problem) to help seal small leaks. Where is this done with no radiator present, or can/should it be done in lieu of tearing down motor. or am I just over-reacting.

Also in a related (distantly) topic, with this having a TRS drive, and that being equivalent to a dinosaur, should I consider replacing that as well, and if so, with what. The pre-owner of the boat estimated that after being slightly modified, the motor runs between 430-450hp.Thanx.

Try pulling your plugs out and see what happens, it kinda sounds like hydrolock. You may not have a radiator if the motor is fresh water cooled. I personally don't like things like quick silver to fix my leaks. Next time leave it running a little longer also.

you need to pull the sparkplugs ASAP and get the motor turning over if your overheat got any water in the cylinders the damage from rust happens very fast

when you get it turning over again it would be a good time to check compression to see how things are

i have no idea what you have for a raw water pump but i would start there first for the overheat problem

tommays

Okay...I pulled the plugs and there was a small amount of water in the #5 hole. Not much, but some. Questions I have are, why did it run off the hose and then foul in the lake, and what do I need to do to find the leak, and fix it. There is not much in the way of local help around here, and I am not sure the steps I need to take to remedy this issue. The boat sat since 2001+/- but was "built-up" prior to sitting. Now what do I do with the water out, do I turn the motor over with the starter, I do not think I can get to it to turn it over with a wrench.

Also, if anyone has any idea if I should replace the TRS and if so with what. thanks

does it have a through hull water pickup? was the valve on? follow the hoses from your sea water pump.

KaGee thanks for the links, they will help.

BenC there is a water pick up, and a "driveway" hose with a valve on it. In retrospect, I did not even look to see if there was a separate or manual switch for the water pickup in the bottom of the hull. Never gave it a thought, and the pre-owner never mentioned anything about a valve down there, I hope there is not a manual one as it is tricky to get to. thank you all for your assistance, keep it coming I am sponging as fast as I can.

I Agree the TRS is an Old Drive,.... But Some HotRod Boating Buddies were saying that Somebody is now selling New replacement parts for them.....
They are/were a Great drive that'll Really Take the HP....... Parts are Scarce, but if this Rumor is True,...???....

Your only choice for an up grade would be the Bravo,..... Or Better.......

There's another good thread going right now,
That Don explained how to Pressure Test the cooling system.......
Have to look for it,... I don't remember the title........
